Rabbit, Run (Rabbit Angstrom, #1)

If you check my “Reading Activity� for this book you’ll find that I have started reading it on the 17th of June. The truth is, like with ‘Rabbit�, real life kept getting in my way and I was barely reading a couple of pages a day. It was time to stop and check my priorities list... it turns out that reading was high up on my priorities list and so I grabbed ‘Rabbit, Run� by the balls and read it in the last couple of days.
This was my first ‘Updike� read and I certainly wasn’t disappointed. The story was a bit more domestic than I expected but also more tragic and compelling. I was literally mesmerised.
So basically, we have this Rabbit guy trying to live a normal life, you know, wife, kids, a job, a house and a car. He certainly tries... But decisions are hard to take and life can be pretty boring and/or hard sometimes and take you to places you never expected to go.
So yeah, I loved Updike’s writing, loved the characters and the way the story unfolded from the casual basketball match in the beginning to the tragic ending.
Read this if you’d like to give Updike a try or if you like Philip Roth or Jonathan Franzen’s writing.

Excellent review Pedro ....... the Rabbit books are some of my favourites. I read them many years ago and am due a re-read :)
So wonderful to see your 5 stars for one of my favourites! Grabbing Rabbit by the balls is the only way to read this book. Yayyyyyy

Good question, Julie. (Although, as we know, Rabbit's freedom is limited and he's seemingly punished forever and a day for his hiatus.) And Pedro, fantastic to see your introduction to John Updike wasn't disappointing. I think this book is the PERFECT one to read first. Good job! Btw Updike is the master of writing warts-and-all domesticity. He writes it again, and again, and again, in the vast majority of his books (or at least the ones I've read).

I really wish I didn't know about Rabbit Redux's bad reputation.
Yes Pedro, we all want to and perhaps some of us already have run away sometimes/at times - nice review mate. Tragic and compelling indeed!! Not sure I like Rabbit thought, however - he was interesting!!
Thank you, Mr President. Yes, I think we all want or feel the need to run away sometimes. Of course there’s a big difference between wanting to and actually doing it and I believe most people stick to wanting to only.
Oh, and I’m completely sure I don’t like Rabbit, the guy, not even a tiny little bit.
But, Mr President, let’s be honest, what else could we expect from a kid in his early twenties? Because I do remember having to remind myself all the time how young Rabbit was. No wonder he wasn’t very happy - living like he was in his sixties already. 😆
Yeah true that (but only a bit), I'm not so sure it's an age thing in this case. I mean this guy (and I'm not so sure what happens in the next books) will continue to think with his member, continue to be bored and unfulfilled and will always be unsettled. That's my guess mate. Cheers Prez 👍🏻 😊
