it was ok
bookshelves: dar

These days I am working mainly on the group of print books that I picked out to reread while I was sorting through my library. Some I don't remember anything about, although I have read all of them in the past. I'm concentrating on them because I want the shelf space and I know some will be taking a short hike to the library donation bin.

I've read at least one other by Jane Smiley and I remember I bought this one because of how much I enjoyed the other. And name recognition, of course. That's important at a used book sale!

But I can't put up with this book this time around. Too many characters, too much going on and yet at the same time nothing happening just yet. I've puttered along for almost 100 pages and the third time I had to stop and think 'Wait, Who Are These People' was once too often.

I remember thinking it was pretty cool back about 20 years ago when I first read it, but obviously my tastes have changed since then. Off to the library it goes!

DNF around page 100.

Lucille This is why I rarely reread books, I figure if I liked it *then*, that’s where it belongs. Plus I have like 3000 plus books on my TBR (and no end in sight lol).

Although I do think there is value in sort of taking stock of yourself via rereading what was an old favorite. No matter if you still like it, or find you no longer do, that tells you something about yourself, and it’s an interesting way to self-evaluate, a learning tool.

Debbie Zapata I have some books I have read dozens of times, and others just once. I have never cleaned out my library the way I did last month (put between 3 and 4 hundred in the give away pile and kept 1650 or so!!) so I was surprised at how many plots I could remember as I picked up each book. It was when I couldn't remember anything at all about them that I put them on my Encore list.

Some of the ones I have re-read so far made me wonder why I kept them, others made me wonder why I ever got them in the first place. What the books are all telling me now is that I don't seem to feel that I need to keep them 'just because'. I can let them go and know I will still survive. I think that says as much about what is going on in my life at this point as it does about my reading tastes, or rather what I want on my actual shelves right now, you know?

And yes, there are always way too many more waiting to be read, aren't there?!

Josephine Briggs I agree with cleaning out your library. What you didn't like others will love. Boo is boring. I got through it thought it was hard.
