it was amazing
bookshelves: 2019, classics

WHEW!! I do believe this is the longest book that I’ve read!

Clocking at around 1316 pages on my ole Kindle, it’s a beast of a book. Honestly, this is not something to be taken lightly if you take on this masterpiece.

Not only is it HUGE but it’s a classic. So it’s going to be wordy my friends. They paid authors back in the day for every word that was written.
So my dear Alexandre Dumas, he got bank with this tome!

The Count of Monte Cristo has always been on my bucket list for completing. So late one night after drinking multiple glasses of wine,

I said, “Fuck it! Let’s do this!
Yeah, it was a lot of liquid courage.

And it was a journey folks.

The Count of Monte Cristo is not a book to finish in a day or even a week. It’s a journey of revenge, redemption and hope. It’s a journey to take down your enemies in a frightening and calculating way. Does my beloved Edmond Dantès find love again? Does he get revenge for being betrayed and framed?

Well, if you’ve seen multiple movies of this plot over the years, then you already know some of these answers.

What I did not realize is that the movies are not remotely like this beast of a book. There is so much more calculating, more characters (good grief, the amount of characters...whew!) and plot points that are completely different.
Yes to books! Now that I've read this, I prefer this tale instead of the Hollywood version. It’s much more believable and the "too convient" plot is taken out.

Some word of advice.

You might struggle with this book if you’re not into classics. You might also struggle in the middle with all the characters and plotting.
You know why? Because you can’t see the ending and all the precise planning that the Count is putting into play.
It’s a dull blade being sharpening over and over again, until it’s finally ready to be plunged into a evil, dark heart.

Am I glad I finally read this? You bet your sweet ass I am.

Thank you Edmond Dantès for making me "wait" and "hope" to see what type of man you actually turn out to be.

Ha!! Yay! I'm already enjoying it and so glad I finally decided to read this. I love that this is your favorite Paula!

Paula W I cannot wait to read your updates on this. It is nothing like Dickens, but you are smart enough to understand what I mean when I say it is written like a Dickens novel where it was published a few chapters at a time in monthly periodicals. That means that something amazing happens (deaths, cliffhangers, etc.) every few chapters to keep the reader interested and tuned in for the next section. Modern authors who publish books of this length don’t do that, so many modern lengthy novels are chores to read. This is a delight, and I hope you enjoy every second of it.

Paula, thank you so much for all the extra information on this type of writing!!
I love cliffhangers and it's already getting into the plotting of these summa bitches. I want to jump in the book and punch them in the face.

Maryam Rz. Well I binge-read A Song of Ice and Fire series, each book 1000+ pages and longer than the one before 😂 what's wrong with long books!? I love them!

I love big books too Mary but I usually don't do huge classics. This was a big deal for me. I've read GoT and The Stand so I'm all about big books. hahaha!
The writing is different and so wooooordy in classics and I'm so glad to accomplish this one.

Maryam Rz. Oh yeah, I agree about the "classic" writing! Well done 😁

I so loved it Paula! It's such an amazing and complex plot. It's so damn good!!
If it wasn't for all the library books and buddy reads, I would have finished it sooner.
But I really enjoyed taking my time with this. It's so well thought out in regards to plot.

I can see how a re-read would help with all the plotting and scheming. I hope you can soon!

Renee Great review! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I actually liked the middle of the book because we're being introduced to some new characters, and I couldn't wait to see where they all figured in to The Count's plan, and I wanted to know how it all played out.

Ha!! That's funny Renee. I really struggled with that part just because there was so many. LOL!
I'm glad you loved this as well and thank you! :D

I was in the same spot Hans! I hope you can get to it soon AND like it. Good luck!

Matthew Congrats! Awesome review! One of my favorite bits of trivia because it goes against pre-conceived ideas of what classic European authors are like is that Dumas was black!

From Wikipedia:

His father, General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie, was born in the French colony of Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti) to Alexandre Antoine Davy de la Pailleterie, a French nobleman, and Marie-Cessette Dumas, a black slave.

Awesome!! I had no idea his grandmother was a black slave. Great info about Dumas!
And thank you Matthew!

Calis Johnson Glad you enjoyed it.
I had to take several breaks while reading but I lucked up with the version I was reading, the translations made it easier to read. Muskateers and Iron Mask are good ones too.

I definitely want to get to The Three Musketeers and The Man in the Iron Mask one day! I'm glad you also liked them as well Calis.
It took me around 3 months to read this so I can understand the breaks.

Mark My compliments for the read, it is truly a big book. And modern editors would have had a field-day with it, good that they cannot butcher a classic. Or can they.

Thanks Mark!! I’m sure the abridged version is cut down a bit with the extra descriptions.
I’m sure modern editors would likely butcher this in my opinion. I think you’re right on that!

Paula W The Three Musketeers, to me, isn’t as good as The Count, but it was close. And it was shorter. I think you’d love it, Ginger.

Good to hear Paula! I’m glad you still liked it. I’ll have to try and get to it this year.

ChopinFC Awesome review! I think I'll muster up the courage and get back to it later this year. 😨

Thanks Rod!! I think once you get past that complicated and slow paced middle, it will get easier for you. Fingers crossed! 🤞

Cynthia I'm going to start this novel tomorrow, would you suggest I start a notebook to take notes?

I'm not sure Cynthia. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt since it's such a big book. I did not take notes and was still able to follow well.
I hope you enjoy this book! It's a big one but I thought it was worth it. I loved it after all!
