EDIT: 12/31/19
I can't believe we were lucky enough to be blessed with TWO books this year for the series! I'm so, so in love with these books! How does Holly do it?! 😍
I loved this book so much! It was everything I needed after Wicked King and more. I gobbled up over half of it in the wee hours of the night and hated to be parted from it even for a few hours sleep🌙 I was tense from nearly the beginning and this series really helps breed your distrust in literally everyone. I felt like Jude, questioning everyone's possible motives and power plays. I don't know how she does it, cause it's exhausting! 🙈
"Mortals are fragile" - Jude
"Not you. You never break" - Cardan
After the previous book I just didn't know how things could work out with some characters, but I'm pleased with how Holly wrapped it all up; between friends, frenemies, and family alike.
"...I still promise to run, tail between my legs. And since I have a tail, that should be amusing for everyone." - Cardan
My heart was bleeding since Jude's exile, but in this installment we see her rise to new heights and impossible tasks. I love her so much 💜 She finds support in the most unexpected places/people, let's herself love and be vulnerable, and fights so bloody hard for her family, for Elfhame, etc.
"You keep rushing into danger. You've got to stop acting as though Court politics is some kind of extreme sport... " - Vivi
I'm so devastated this is the end of the story 💔😭 I need so much more from these wonderfully flawed characters I've come to cherish so much!
"Good thing you're a lousy shot." - Jude
"A poultice. To draw any fever from the blood and help the patient heal faster. Unfortunately, it won't draw the sting from your tongue." - Bomb
The side characters too are so unique and special as well. It's amazing how attached you can get to the Bomb & Roach. Oak & Vivi & Heather, even Ghost. Also we get more Roiben!!😍 And Kaye with an attitude lol. Love her.
Even Taryn is somewhat redeemed, which I didn't believe was even possible. I still don't trust her by a long shot, but I'm glad for Jude's sake with how things turned out between them. Also am I the only one who suspects...? (view spoiler)
And of course we're given plenty of humor to lighten the tone a bit. I can never have enough humor, especially from this crew of sharp-tongued characters.
"Oh, this is going to be amazing. Seriously, his exile is the best present you ever got me." - Vivi
Turning the final page was so painfully hard, I was already feeling withdrawals. Luckily, the B&N special edition has the letters in the back that Cardan sent to Jude. Gah!! Made me smile one last time 💞
This definitely goes down as one of my absolute favoritest series! And many a re-read is in its future! 💗 Honestly I give this whole trilogy 10 stars because a mere five doesn't do it justice.
