If this book were a meal it would be a 10-course dinner with quite a few savory morsels, but settle in because you’ll be cutting through a bit of fat and gristle and there’s going to be a lot chewing.

There is a good story here, but it is buried under an avalanche of run-on sentences and a surfeit of words. One sentence clocked in at 157 words and at more than 500 pages, reading often became arduous. And then there were the tortured sentences:

The vulpine abilities of his body, incongruous with the benign aesthetic magnetism of his persona.

This is the kind of stylized writing that I often find with debut authors from vaunted MFA programs and I want to say stop it, you don’t need to use all of your words or tricks in one book. Just tell me a story and tell it to me well.

That’s the bad news.

The good news about this exhaustive feast is that if you’re into family dramas and don’t mind them being on the side of overwritten, then this one delivers in numerous ways, both painful and heartwarming. The characters are well-drawn and the daughters are all irritating in different ways. I know that doesn’t sound like a selling point, but I do appreciate an author’s ability to make me feel, even if that feeling is one of exasperation.

Now pass the Tums.

Kelli And by-bye for me. Thanks for the informative review.

message 2: by Julie (new)

Julie Excellent review, Victoria! 💖

Richard (on hiatus) An excellent, balanced review Victoria .......... I’m not massively keen on very long sentences as my mind frequently drifts and I have to start again! A sad confession I know :)

message 4: by Karen (new)

Karen Fab review Victoria! I had started this before and just didn’t keep going.. wasn’t too interested.

message 5: by Beata (new)

Beata Grand review, Victoria :))

Victoria Kelli wrote: "And by-bye for me. Thanks for the informative review."

You're very welcome. If not for book club, I would have abandoned at the first epically-long sentence...which was early on.

Thanks, Julie!

Ha! I LOVE that confession Richard and share your wandering mind syndrome. Thanks so much for your kind words.

You were right not to, it's just too dense for enjoyment. Thanks, Karen!

Beata wrote: "Grand review, Victoria :))"

Thanks much, Beata!

Cheri The good news is that your review is fabulous and informative and I honestly loved it. The good news for me, if not for the author, that any chance of reading this went out the window with the quote you included. If that's just one sentence out of an entire book, I shudder to think of the remainder!

Brandice Oh boy, 157 words?! I am looking forward to this one but appreciate the honesty as always in your review, Victoria!

Meredith (Trying to catch up!) Ha! Love your review, Victoria! I don't think this one is for me, but I so enjoyed reading your review!

message 12: by JanB (new)

JanB You explained perfectly why I DNF'd this one at page 100 - that sentence is a prime example of the kind of writing I loathe. And seeing your 3 stars I feel validated in my decision, so thanks dear friend.

Very creative and excellent review that I enjoyed far more than the book 😉

Thanks, Cheri, that means a lot! I'm just not a fan of overwritten narratives, especially when I have to bob and weave through complicated sentences.

Victoria Brandice wrote: "Oh boy, 157 words?! I am looking forward to this one but appreciate the honesty as always in your review, Victoria!"

I hope you have a better time of it than I did, Brandice. The writing is the number one deal breaker for me usually.

Victoria Meredith wrote: "Ha! Love your review, Victoria! I don't think this one is for me, but I so enjoyed reading your review!"

Yay, thanks Meredith! When style is chosen over substance, I'd just rather leave the party.

You're very welcome, my reading twin! I would likely have done the same if not for book club. And thank you for your kind words. Sometimes I have to entertain myself if a book doesn't do it. 😉

Zoeytron Your reviews never fail to delight, Victoria. Love that part about using all your words in one book.

Dana It makes my head hurt to just read how exhausting it was. Thanks for saving me!

Victoria Zoeytron wrote: "Your reviews never fail to delight, Victoria. Love that part about using all your words in one book."

Well that's just about the nicest thing I've heard in eons. Right back atcha, ZT.

Dana wrote: "It makes my head hurt to just read how exhausting it was. Thanks for saving me!"

Hahaha! A migraine-inducing read is definitely not for you, Dana!

Kevin Ansbro I can't abide run-on sentences.
Ditto dialogue that isn't nestled within speech marks. It's not big and it's not clever!
: )
Excellent review, Victoria. Please stay safe!

Marialyce Pass the tums indeed! One that I will definitely place in my dnf before even starting pile! 🙄

I do believe you've mentioned that in a rant (or two) which I've always enjoyed. ;-) Thanks for dropping by, Kevin.

Ha! I think you have to be a glutton for the overwritten to truly enjoy this one.

Melissa wrote: "Wow! Thanks for the honest review, Victoria! Definitely gonna pass on this meal. 😆"

I think it will cause bloat and severe indigestion, Melissa.

Susanne Thank you for the stellar, honest review Victoria! (I admit that I tried to read it and gave up very early on). You so very eloquently described why this didn’t work for me. I am however sorry that this was a stinker for you also! I hope your next read is amazing!

Haha...a stinker! It was really more of a mildly annoying smell, but I'm glad you gave up on it. If it hadn't been a book club book, I would have bailed very early.

Audrey W. I loved your review! I rated the book four stars when considering the interesting development of the characters and plot lines. However, I also found some of the language overly descriptive and wordy. This often necessitated a reread of several passages where my comprehension was clouded by vocabulary that seemed like it came straight from a thesaurus. All in all, for me it was an entertaining tale of dysfunctional family relationships and sibling bonds. I’m glad to see that your review echoed some of my thoughts about this book.

Thanks for sharing your reading experience, Audrey, it mirrors my own...except in the stars. I found it laborious and re-reading passages made it feel more like 1,000 pages so just not enjoyable. But I agree with you, the characters were top notch.

Dorothy Still reading this but I find the parents continuing high passion love story a bit unreal - after 40 years. Come on! I am determined to finish it though.

Haha! We talked about that in our book club, wasn't ringing true, especially for those with 25+ years under their marital belts. Good luck!

Carrie I completely agree with everything you said. The drama also felt very contrived, the sisters all had hard lives because they had such loving parents, oh my the travesty.

Nancy Long Great review@ I am halfway through and debating whether it is worh finishing. I might add, I rarely stop reading a book I have started. So...
