There was such a hoopty-doo of fanfare for this book that I was likely anticipating something far different than what these pages contained. It was certainly unusual, but the way the reader eventually comes to understand the characters' purpose in life and why their artwork had meaning, well.. It wasn't a happy realization, but it was certainly written very well.

I wanted to shake the characters by their shoulders to get them to change the arc of their lives - but that is a sign of either powerful writing or just my naivety in being manipulated by an author. A sad, futuristic book with themes that have been written of before, but done smoothly here. 4 stars

Susan I have heard so much about Kazuo Ishiguro and have yet to read any of his books. This is on my list. It sounds as impactful as everyone describes although in a less than upbeat way. I just have to experience how he writes - there's just too much attention on him as an author not to. From your review, it will be an experience!

LA It is beautifully written but I had no idea going in that it was so sad. If one is ready to face that, it is a wonderful read.
