it was ok

this book is a masterclass for how male authors should never write a female character. like, never ever ever. i honestly have never read such terrible characterisation before and i can only think of two reasons for why that is.
1. andy weir just copied what he wrote for mark in ‘the martian and pasted it into this book. or,
2. andy weir has somehow managed to never meet a woman in his entire life.
i think AW was just rushing through to quickly put out a book while he could ride on the success of ‘the martian (the film) and stay relevant. i mean, just because he could write a book, does that really mean he should? especially when its so poor quality? the writing is extremely lacking, the plot is not interesting and is lazily thrown together, and jazz is one of the worst characters in the history of ever. i just, i am still so shocked that someone could write such a terrible character. i really dont know what to say.

ash | this may be the lowest rating i think i've ever seen you hand out!

jessica i do sooo much research before picking up a book, that its uncommon! i also save my one star ratings for books that i DNF and i never post those, but it does happen!

that makes sense! i have this problem where i am unable to dnf a book -- it eats at me to leave things unfinished so i have to force myself to do it just to say it's completed. lol

jessica im the same, so its takes an extremely horrible book for me to DNF it. lol.

ash | I'm so curious as to those you've dnf 😊 feel free to DM me if you didn't want to post it in the open!

Emily I didn't care for this one either.

jessica yeah, it was just really disappointing, wasnt it?

Syed Well here goes it off my to-read list.

jessica :( usually i feel bad when my review dissuades someone to read a book, but in this case, im glad. its sooo bad. lol.

message 10: by Syed (new)

Syed Haha, hey, thank you because I would have totally hated it as you described it.

Paula W I felt the same when I read it. So sad.

jessica sophie - same! the martian was a 5 star read for me, so its such a horrible feeling knowing this book is no where near as good as it. :/

paula - ah, im sorry it didnt work out for you either! :(

Peter Martuneac That’s shocking, especially with how good The Martian was! But yeah, bad characters are really hard if not impossible to overcome. What was the worst thing about her?

Dawnie Its wonderful so see another person mentioning if authors should be published/writing a book simply because they can of if even authors with one big success should be treated a bit more sceptical by publishers with their next book and see if it is actually good instead of trying to ride the fame wave the author might currently have. GREAT review!

Lionwraith Drogo Lol, and you Jessica are a masterclass on why reviewers who are women should never review a male author.../s you see what I did there, your comment is just as sexist as his book was. I didn't really like either. You literally make sexist comment about all male authors because this particular one wrote a badly stereotypical book. Lol. Try being less sexist and making your reviews more informative instead of spewing male hatred. The book was shitty, so review it. Don't spew garbage.

jessica i think you may have misinterpreted my comment 'this book is a masterclass for how male authors should never write female characters.'

i am not saying that men should never have female characters in their novels. you are correct - that is sexist.

what i am saying is jazz is a perfect example of how men should never portray female characters. she is unrealistic and inaccurate. i feel like i have the right to call out terrible characterisation when i see it.

that being said, i can see how my vague statement could lead to your confusion.

Phoebe S. I was wondering why people didn't like the book, and now I can kind of see why. I disagree a little with regards to the plot, but I'm also easily satisfied if a book is in my genre.

I'm wondering whether it's possible that Rosario Dawson's narration makes this book. I've looked at the quotes that people find horrible and thought about how maybe I wouldn't have been as forgiving if Dawson hadn't made them sound inconsequential. It could possibly be that the audiobook might be slightly better just for that reason, since reading aloud is a type of interpretation and her interpretation might be better than whatever was in Weir's head.

Rebecca Agreed! I really liked the setting and plot, but Jazz was so inauthentic. I wonder if any female editors or sensitivity readers worked on this?

Suna Preach. The initial concept was cool, but you are so spot on with how "this book is a masterclass for how male authors should never write a female character." 100000% my problem with this book. I am about 60% through and I'm abandoning it.

Maddie Lytle I remember reading the first few chapters and thinking "has this guy ever met a human woman"

James I'm live tweeting my experience of reading this book and I'm so glad I'm not the only one who finds the writing annoying and unbelievable. the extremely awkward nonstop "sexy" banter is driving me crazy.

Aaron Gardner I really liked it, maybe the wisecracking was a bit much during the climax but other than that it was great. Not every female character has to behave like you would. Just saying.
