it was amazing
bookshelves: horror

One of the quintessential Lovecraft novellas! A first person narrator comes to visit a decayed fishing town named Innsmouth and is having an nightmarish time there. You'll hear about the cosmic horror, read about 'The Order of Dagon', meet Zadoc Allen and his gruesome tale what actually befell the town. Who are the queer people of Innsmouth? How are the 'fish devils' described? Our narrator flees the town by night chased by strange looking humans (are they still humans?). On his research of family history he discovers a relationsship to a Mrs Marsh who was married to the most influential man in Innsmouth. This is one of the eeriest stories I know. Here you get insight what the Old Ones really plan. Very elaborate, very detailey and very scary. This certainly is one of my favourite Lovecraft stories. Absolutely recommended! What a shocker.

J. Griff My favorite Lovecraft story!!

Peter Hi J. Griff, fully understand your opinon. It's also among my absolute favourites. If he writes like this it's hard to say what's the best story. The Shadow Over Innsmouth has it all. The transformed people, the Dago cult, the family mystery... an incredibly good story. All the best Peter

Michael J. A favorite of mine also. I place it within the five best Lovecraft stories -- I can't decide on just one.

Peter Hi Michael, it's also within my inner circle of Lovecraft favourites. Definitely one of the eeriest stories he's ever written. All the best Peter

P.E. Have you ever stumbled across visuals from Bloodborne? There is a whole fishing village largely inspired by Innsmouthers! Quite a convincing take on the village even though Lovecraft's is still much more disquieting :)

Peter Hi P.E., no I haven't. But I thought that Lovecraft found a description of Innsmouth in reality and probably spent some time there (also had to think about Stephen Kings fictional Derry). Lovecraft turned the village into a nightmare. You're absolutely right about it. All the best Peter

Dan One of the best Lovecraft stories ever, and a true favorite of mine.

Depending on how you feel about comics, I'd recommend Alan Moore's NEONOMICON to any Innsmouth fans. Jaw-droppingly good stuff.

Peter Hi Dan, great comment. Love to hear that The Shadow Over Innsmouth is a true favourite of yours. I like it a lot too. Good to hear about Alan Moore's Neonomicon. Have to confess I never heard about it before (okay, I'm no comic expert). All the best Peter

J. Griff Neonomicon is a superb read, but Alan Moore's 12 part story called "Providence" is by far better. You get a real taste as Moore puts the horror vibe back into Lovecraft's writing.

PROVIDENCE is sitting in my stacks..I haven't gotten to it yet, but if you're saying it is better than NEONOMICON, then I'm looking forward to it even more than I was before.

Peter Hi J. Griff, great recommendation. Thanks for giving us this information. All the best Peter
