3.5 stars

With heat indexes soaring into the triple digits for the past week, the thought of being snowed in at a remote cabin sounded romantic, delightful and cozy. That is, until the dead bodies started piling up.

Reminiscent of the locked door mysteries of Agatha Christie, where there is a limited number of suspects, this was an entertaining dive into the lives and the psyches of the guests at the lodge. I loved the atmosphere of the inn, and the eccentric characters.

Unlike Christie, the clues weren’t there along the way so there is no moment for the reader at the end when everything clicks into place. Still, this was entertaining and engaging with a surprise ending that I appreciated. Recommended for fans of Agatha Christie type mysteries with a modern twist.

I tried to fill in my reading with the audio version on a long drive and I don’t recommend listening to this one. The narrator has an odd robotic cadence and I agree with the reviewer who said it was like being read to by Siri.

I received a copy of this book via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review

Jennifer ~ TarHeelReader Woo, that’s hot, Jan, and it’s hot here, too. That’s a great plan to read this book during the summer! Good to know about the audio, too, and wonderful review!

Jennifer, thanks! Even my dogs don't want to go out, haha. Some people don't want to read about winter settings in the summer but I love it. It gives me hope this too will end.

Erin Clemence Jan, sorry to hear the audio of this book was poor :( That can make all the difference!

Sandra I occasionally listen to an audio and I agree with you, the narrators voice can be a deal breaker 😊. Glad you managed to finish it!

Holly B (slower pace!) Great review Jan! And I agree about the Siri narrators. no thanks

Stephanie ~~ Great review, Jan. My sentiments on this one were similar, but I still enjoyed it.

Marialyce I so agree, Jan. It was an entertaining story, wonderful review of a book that had a good overall premise.

Jenna ❤ ❀ ❤ The thought of being snowed in does sound rather delightful, but I'll pass on the dead bodies! Sorry the narration wasn't so great for this book, Jan. Nice review!

Thanks Erin, luckily I had the e-book too but I do have to wonder how these narrators get the job.

Sandra, I'll usually DNF a book quickly if the narrator is awful. I am picky - no overacting and no Siri voice 😉 I'm glad I could fill in with the e-book in this case!

Holly, thanks 💖 It was so weird, l've never heard anyone talk that way, lol!

Thanks Stephanie, I just read your review and it seems we both would have preferred an ending that had clues along the way, like Christie...which is much harder to write IMO

Marialyce, I'm not surprised we felt similarly about this one 😊 👯‍♀

Thanks Jenna! I'm so ready to be chilly and read snuggled under a cozy blanket! Maybe I'll just crank down the a/c 😉

Deanna Great review, Jan!

message 19: by Yun (new) - rated it 3 stars

Yun Great review, Jan! This is pretty much exactly how I felt about the book too. I enjoyed the limited number of suspects, but was a little letdown by the lack of clues leading to the solution. Still, I like anything that's a bit reminiscent of AC. 😊

message 20: by Angela M (new)

Angela M We’ve got some high temps, too , Jan but I think the dead bodies will keep me away from this one . Hope your next one is better and that you keep cool !

Yun, I read through all the AC books in my 20s - I'm a huge fan so anything that brings back that delicious feeling of cracking open a new AC book is a winner for me too. But she sets the bar high!

Alecia I see I read this book last winter, and gave it a similar review as you. It was entertaining and light, and sometimes that's just what we need. I read mine, however, so no annoying Siri voice.

Alecia, I couldn't listen for long, ugh. Who talks like this? But it was a nice pleasant read for sure.

Debbie Ha! Maybe it WAS Siri! Excellent review. Glad it helped you endure the heat wave. Where do you live? I’m allergic to the heat. When it’s 85 and up, I complain that I am dying. No lack of drama here!

Debbie, if it wasn't Siri, it was her twin 😂
We are two peas in a pod. My husband says I have a 2 degree window of comfort and it's true. Where do I live? I have to check every morning (we are between states right now) but currently I'm in NE OH where you don't expect triple digit heat waves. Thankfully we are back in the 70s now and it's delightful....whew. I'd take cold over heat and humidity any day.

Thanks Paulette, I love anything Agatha Christie and feel we've lost something now that's it's all about the big twists/reveals.

Anne I love your first paragraph. LOL.

message 42: by Tina (new)

Tina I enjoyed your review Jan. Too bad you did not enjoy this one more though. If I decide to read this one thanks for the tip on skipping the audio!

Kat (Books are Comfort Food) Oh no, sorry to hear the listening portion wasn’t great. The voice actors on these books can make or break a book. Glad you still liked the book and story overall. ❣️

Donna Weber ( Recuperating from Surgery) Great review, Jan! I didn't review, but understand about how it all couldn't click into place without the clues.

message 45: by Pat (new)

Pat Great review Jan but I won’t be reading this anytime soon. Locked room mysteries are also on the ‘avoid for now list,

I understand. I took a long break from he genre and it did wonders for my reading life. Thanks Pat!

Donna wrote: "Great review, Jan! I didn't review, but understand about how it all couldn't click into place without the clues."

That always annoys me. I love to look back and think 'aha", not WTH just happened, lol

Definitely! If I hadn't been a captive audience in the car I would have abandoned the audio for print.

Thanks Tina. I know you also enjoy audiobooks but do try this one in print 😊

Sandysbookaday Love your review Jan. Bodies piling up usually puts a damper on the mood! And thanks for the warning about avoiding the audiobook. I can't imagine being read to by Siri. 😂🤣❤
