did not like it

Granted, it has been a long while since I've last read a young adult novel. However, if Twilight is any indication of where this genre is heading, then it really is a sad state. Twilight is horrendously bad. The first person narration is one of the worst that I've encountered. The author does a poor job of describing the events. She merely tells. "I did this...I did that." That's how the narration went. It was very stilted. If you want to laugh, here's a direct quote from the book: "I deliberated where I stood, wanting to return to him badly, but afraid I might have morning breath." Seriously, that came from book!

I'm also not quite sure to whom this novel is marketed. If it's for the 16+ crowd, the language is surely much too elementary for them. On the other hand, the trashy romance theme just seemed too mature for the under 16 crowd. I would be uncomfortable reading about a 40+ year old man pursuing a 17 year old child, let alone a 100+ year old vampire! The vampire, Edward, was much too mature for Bella; and the characterization of the two repeatedly pointed this out. So if it's not okay for an older man to pursue a young teenager, why would it be okay for a vampire?

The character of Bella was also much too weak and plain for the dashing, oh-so-gorgeous Edward. Why he would love her, I have no clue. The author certainly didn't make me feel as though she was deserving of his love. Frankly she was rather boring as a character. The book should've concentrated on Edward and his family, who I found much more interesting.

Skip this book. It's not worth the read, unless you want to laugh out loud at how bad it is.

jacky You'd be surprised what 16 year olds are and are not capable of reading. There is nothing wrong with a book marketed for older readers with easier language. There's nothing wrong with an easy read every once in a while. And this is coming from a person who forces 14 year olds to read the Scarlet Letter.

Linda Yes, I expected so much more. It's dull and melodramatic. I'm trying to finish it.
