Pollock wrote with strong prose a powerful,haunting story about residents in two rural communities. It was different how he had many POV characters, some that you read about in few pages and never read about them again. It made the story less predictable and more real with many authentic characters. There were only a few clear main characters.
I was deeply moved by the stories of some of the characters, their situations. Others like Carl Henderson was sick in mundane,creepy way and not just another fake monster you see in other crime fiction.
I could read 300 pages of this novel if it was just about people living their lifes, walking through dim woods to their homes, the places he wrote about felt that real, important story. His writing ability, his ability to write great characters that feel as real world people was much higher than i expected. I have no choice but to rate this novel 5 stars, near perfect novel and one of the best i have read in this kind of literature.
The biggest flaw of the book is that it had a bit too many coincidences near the end. It stood out because before that i couldnt predict what will happen next.

"I only knew the title when i started reading this novel. I didnt read the synopsis or any comments about the book. Im very pleasently surprised of this epic story of couple of rural communities. The writer writes so convincingly about many low life, desperate characters. Some of them are very hard to stomach."

I knew i wasnt able to get this book in time for February group read but i just want to try a new contemporary author for me because i knew the gang in Pulp Fiction group is the closest to my taste in this field. I had never heard of this author and the book before. Now i know why that he has written only two books.

If you can do it, I guess it's better to have surprises all the way through the book, instead of piling them up at the end. Would that have worked in this book?

Surprises at the end would have hurt the book much more, ruined a real,haunting story. The flaw wasnt a real flaw, it didnt stand out enough as negatively to hurt the the overall strengths of the book.
The coincidences at the end was good for emotional reasons hitting you hard in the gut. When you worried how the story would end for the people you liked.
