Okay, it's quiz time.

What do water crackers, iocaine powder, and Verity have in common?

...Give up?

They are all completely tasteless.

Unfortunately, that's potentially the kindest word I can think of to describe this book.

Lowen is a writer with an interesting task...becoming ghostwriter to hit writer Verity, now incapacitated after a tragic accident. She must pick up where the author left off and husband Jeremy is all too happy to help make this happen. As Lowen dives in, she uncovers a manuscript of Verity's with some disturbing information in it...deadly information, in fact. As she continues to read and unravel Verity's mysterious past and her own feelings for Jeremy begin to deepen and take root, Lowen begins to find out things she wishes she hadn't about the death and tragedy in this couple's life...and is Verity REALLY stuck in that bed?

This is potentially the internet's most hyped book...and days later, I am still not sure why. There was not a single moment throughout reading that really grabbed me and got me frantically page flipping.

The gratuitous and somewhat graphic sex scenes? Sure, they were there. But they were fairly repetitive and not as important as I'd thought they would be.

Verity's manuscript? Seemed to go on forever. I kept waiting and waiting for all of the salacious twists I'd heard about...but everything I came up with in my mind was more exciting than the actual reveal. For instance...(view spoiler)

And then the part that disturbed me most personally, as a new mom...completely disgusting and gut-wrenching sections of child abuse that were over the top and unecessarily graphic. I mean, kudos to Hoover to be able to be that far removed from her care for her own children to even write those words...but as a mom to a 6 month old, I almost got physically ill and was in tears reading these sections. I normally can handle TW type content...but this is one instance where I would love to forget ever reading those passages. So fair warning to all parents out there!

I don't feel disgusted after finishing this book, but it has left me with very mixed emotions about trying another read from this author. I got this book on a Kindle daily deal for free a while back...and in this case, I feel I certainly got what I paid for...but not what I bargained for.

2.5 stars, rounded up

**Please check out the glowing 5 star reviews for this one from many other incredible readers and reviewers! This was clearly not a fit for me.**

Well I do love Jar of Hearts, so at least I can dive headfirst into that (when I can scrape together 5 minutes!) I wish I had loved this as much as you did Jayme! 😩 but thanks for not telling me I'm crazy LOL 💗

Margaret M - (having a challenging time and on GR as much as I can) Love the honest review Catherine and nice you delivered with a bit of humour. Excellent points and review. At least you have a good coming up next ❤️

message 4: by Kerrin (new)

Kerrin I have been going back and forth on this one. Thank you for the trigger warnings in your great review. Now I know I will probably pass.

Jayme I hated the OTT sex scenes, but was entertained by the rest! Always appreciate an honest review! 😘

Kat (Books are Comfort Food) Sorry you didn’t like this one much, Catherine. Hope your next read is better. I thoroughly enjoyed this one, especially the twists. 💝

Holly B (slower pace!) Omg, yes! We had the same experience 😂 I totally get your review 🥰, I wanted to unread this one. Haha, glad you've moved on.

Michael David (on hiatus) Sorry this wasn't the right read for you, my friend! On to the next. 🤗

Canadian Jen Eek my friend lent me this one last year. I still haven’t gotten to it but I’ll read you review after should I decide to read it or remove it!

Aleta I agree with you

message 11: by Gina (new) - rated it 4 stars

Gina You’re are on point about the child abuse but what real question is are you team manuscript or team letter? 😂

Meghin Finally someone I agree with on this book. Thanks for being so bold her fan base can be wild lol. I didn’t understand the hype with this book either and the over the top sex scenes made me want to claw my eyes out they were so repetitive and irritating and not something I want in my thrillers lol

Margaret M - (having a challenging time and on GR as much as I can) When I use my phone sometimes the "like" isn't registering. Updated again. Great review as I mentioned earlier Catherine 😀💖

Anytime Margaret! 💞 I know I was a bit salty, but honestly reading this as a newer mom was a big mistake. Had I known that part, I might have skipped this and always wondered 'what if' instead...but oh well. At least now I can say I've read it and move on! Very happy to hopefully finish Jar of Hearts today! 😍😎

Nainika Gupta Awesome review :)

I feel the same Kerrin! Probably why I put off reading it for SO long because I had a feeling I would either love or hate it. I think Colleen Hoover is a funny and wonderful person, but this book was not for me at all. She just went a bit too far for my personal taste, but I'm glad the review was helpful hopefully without being spoiler-y. 👍 Thanks so much!

Oh I know Jayme, your review was fabulous! 💕 I'm glad it worked for you, and I feel the same, although I hate writing 'negative' reviews even when I feel like I must! 😭

Derek (I'M BACKKKK!) I gave this one higher marks but felt really bad about it haha so I definitely agree with your comments. Valid points! Great, honest review, Catherine!

Kaceey Excellent review Catherine! Sorry this one didn’t work for you. Hope you love your next read!💞

C. (Comment, never msg). I thought I might like this because several friends wrote about it beautifully. A displeased reader described their incredulity of the plot by revealing it in a spoiler tag. I avoid details unless undecided. I am glad I looked. I would be annoyed with a character and baseless motive like that.

I'm sorry I didn't either Kat! 😪 I so wanted to end the year with a bang...but it isn't quite over yet! I really am enjoying Jar of Hearts, so if that ends strong, I'll be thrilled. I am very happy you loved this one though!! 👏💗

message 22: by Rosh (new) - rated it 4 stars

Rosh I went in with zero expectations. That's probably why I enjoyed it, except for the OTT sex scenes. This is one book that gets such extreme reactions that it's always fun to read its reviews. 😂

I did love reading your review, Catherine.😊 Hope your next pick washes away Verity from your mind. 💕

AHH Holly I had to tell you right away! 🤣 I was so hoping it would work better for me, but nope! I wish I could unread it too...or at least, certain parts of it. I really felt so sick, and honestly I was getting over the stomach flu at the time so that did not help the situation! LOL but moved onto better, and I know you have too!! 💕

Melissa (Semi-hiatus for Work) I completely agree with everything you said here, and I totally agree with your spoiler, that would have been so much better! I have come to the conclusion that this author's books are just not for me.

message 25: by Icey (new) - rated it 5 stars

Icey Wonderful review Catherine. I enjoyed this book but I totally understand why it was not a book for you. I hope you are going to enjoy your next read❤️

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - in a book slump :( Michael wrote: "Sorry this wasn't the right read for you, my friend! On to the next. 🤗"

I'm so sorry too my friend, I feel so let down by the entire internet and every Facebook book group I've ever been in...🤣🤣 but so thrilled you enjoyed it! Happy to try to FINALLY finish Jar of Hearts...hopefully! 🤞🤗

message 27: by Lucy (new)

Lucy Yikes! I've enjoyed some CoHo books, but glad I've kept this one off my TBR 😬.

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - in a book slump :( Jen wrote: "Eek my friend lent me this one last year. I still haven’t gotten to it but I’ll read you review after should I decide to read it or remove it!"

Sounds like a plan Jen! I had this for a good two years before I got around to it, so I'll be curious to see what you think!! If you choose to read, I hope you love it! :)

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - in a book slump :( Aleta wrote: "I agree with you"

Thanks Aleta! 👍

Well Gina you got me to Google this and go down the Reddit rabbit hole so thank you for that! 😂 if I had to choose I’m probably team manuscript…but at the end of the day, I’m not actually convinced my theory (under spoiler tags up top) is wrong either! LOL

Glad to hear it Meghin! 💜 it’s always hard to be the outlier. Her fan base IS wild, you aren’t wrong! I wonder if I’d started with a straight romance of hers if I would have liked it more. I still don’t think I would’ve loved it as a thriller, but maybe I’d enjoy her other books. I think the sex scenes drove me a little crazy because Verity just kept describing the same thing over and over(view spoiler) but here’s to solidarity! 🙌🏻

message 33: by Kat (new)

Kat I love your honest review, Catherine! 💖 I'm confident that I'd love it far more than this book, especially knowing the story contains child abuse. 😣 I've still never read this author, but I have to admit, I'm not feeling very inspired to at the moment!

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - in a book slump :( Margaret wrote: "When I use my phone sometimes the "like" isn't registering. Updated again. Great review as I mentioned earlier Catherine 😀💖"

Happens to me all of the time too Margaret, thanks for checking! 💞 that drives me crazy too! 😂

Ceecee Hmm sounds like one to give a wide berth too. I have an up and down relationship with CoHo anyway mostly down! Great review Catherine and very honest ❤️🎄❤️

message 37: by Ceecee (new)

Ceecee Ps a baby, you’re moving and managing to read?! You are awesome!! ❤️

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - in a book slump :( Derek wrote: "I gave this one higher marks but felt really bad about it haha so I definitely agree with your comments. Valid points! Great, honest review, Catherine!"

You should not feel bad!!! Lots of people loved this book, so it is worth the praise I’m sure, just didn’t work for me personally. I respect the author, I just didn’t love her artistic choices I think. I’m glad you enjoyed it though, thanks Derek!! 😊

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - in a book slump :( Kaceey wrote: "Excellent review Catherine! Sorry this one didn’t work for you. Hope you love your next read!💞"

Thanks so much, Kaceey! 💖 I was sad too, but onward and upward! My other long-awaited read was wonderful, if I ever have a few to write my review!!

I understand completely. The good reviews are out there though, so if it sounds up your alley, I’d still recommend it to you!

Oh how I wish I had Rosh! 😂 I have seen this book recommended more than maybe any other though, so it was hard to not want it to blow me away. I didn’t hate the premise as much as the choices she made. I think Verity could have come off the way she did without going to that extreme…but shocking is the right word! LOL

I’m glad even though you loved the book you didn’t get too miffed by my review! 😉 my next reads have certainly erased the ickiness from my mind, so thank you much for your kind words! 🤗

Christine Indorf This book was the worst book I have ever read. So predictable and just plan awful. I can't understand what is so good about it but each there own!! By the way love your joke!!!

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - in a book slump :( Melissa (LifeFullyBooked) wrote: "I completely agree with everything you said here, and I totally agree with your spoiler, that would have been so much better! I have come to the conclusion that this author's books are just not for..."
Thank you Melissa!! Wouldn’t that have been an interesting take? I mean, I guess it could theoretically be true…you never know! I honestly wish I’d started with one of her straight romances instead of this one because I still feel undecided about the author. Can completely understand where you are coming from though, I’m 50/50 whether or not to give her another shot myself. Probably moving to the back burner and I’ll try to revisit later I suppose!

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - in a book slump :( Icey wrote: "Wonderful review Catherine. I enjoyed this book but I totally understand why it was not a book for you. I hope you are going to enjoy your next read❤️"

Thank you Icey!! 💞 I do understand why others loved it and maybe if my expectations weren’t so sky high, I would have liked it more…it just wasn’t my cup of tea. But I know CoHo has a devoted fan add and I might just give one of her romances a shot one of these days! Thanks so much! ☺️

Denise Finally someone else who found this book lacking! 😘 I gave this one 2 stars and have never looked back. It was not the book for me either. Great review, Catherine! 💙

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - in a book slump :( Lucy wrote: "Yikes! I've enjoyed some CoHo books, but glad I've kept this one off my TBR 😬."

Well from what I understand this one is a bit different than her “standard romances, so maybe you’d enjoy it Lucy! 💖

message 47: by Jen (last edited Dec 22, 2021 11:57AM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jen Same gurl, same. I was stupefied when I finished reading. Surely *that* couldn't be the book everyone is so buzzy about.

I haven't read any others, but the plotline of Layla really really bothers me (semi-spoiler: the plot twist tries to excuse a lot of truly heinous and abusive behavior) and I just don't think I'll ever be tempted to pick up CoHo again.

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - in a book slump :( JJ wrote: "Was thinking about giving it a try. But now I won't."

Fair enough JJ! 👍

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - in a book slump :( Kat wrote: "I love your honest review, Catherine! 💖 I'm confident that I'd love it far more than this book, especially knowing the story contains child abuse. 😣 I've still never read this author, but I have to..."

Thanks so much, Kat! 💕 to be honest, I had no idea that sort of content would bother me the way it did, but there wasn’t enough redeeming about this book to really make up for it for me. Shock factor for sure, but my mama bear instincts just couldn’t handle it! 😞 I wish I had started with one of her romances instead of this one, but maybe I’ll give one a try down the road. Hope if you try one of hers you’ll have better luck than I did! 🍀

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - in a book slump :( Ceecee wrote: "Hmm sounds like one to give a wide berth too. I have an up and down relationship with CoHo anyway mostly down! Great review Catherine and very honest ❤️🎄❤️"

I agree Ceecee! 💞 I’m not sure how I’ll fare with any of her other books if I dare to give them a try, but we shall see! Good to know I may be in for a bit of a rollercoaster ride!! 😯
