liked it

I have tried three times and can not drop into this book. It's too disjointed my brain doesn't work that way I guess. I wanted to like it. I loved the premise, the concept. It just didn't work and I'm more disappointed about it than anyone else. :-0

Book2Dragon I know, everyone else seems to love this book, but I would give it a half star. Rich and I agree with you.

Thats what I mean I really wanted to like it. :-)

This is a strange book with the chasm between those who like it and those who don't.

Alan Tomkins Exactly my experience trying to read it, too.

david whats so bad about it, (i mean it inspired a catphrase) I hve been intreseted in reading it for a while but never managed to find a copy?

message 13: by Michael (new)

Michael David (on hiatus) You tried three times, which is more than most of us do. 'A' for effort, David!

Sophie I'm sorry you couldn't get into it. Funny thing is, it's one of my all-time favorite books. Go figure +)

pretty sure the phrase was around before the book

Jonathan K (Max Outlier) Interesting.. It's one of my top ten choices. The characters, drama, humor and zany antics in a war environment are unique. It's hard not to think that MASH was created using a similar idea! Each to their own.

Kathryn in FL Jonathan, you are probably correct. I guess for me, I do understand gallows humor (my sister and mom worked in the medical profession), I just didn't connect with it. It does make sense that when you face life and death the mundane does seem absurd.

Ok i was lead to belive that A catch-22 is a paradoxical situation from which an individual cannot escape because of contradictory rules or limitations. and that the term was coined by Joseph Heller, who used it in his 1961 novel Catch-22.
but i may be wrong so moving on what does that have to do with me asking whats so bad about the book?

Jennifer Welsh Right there with you, David! Even though there were times I laughed out loud, I didn’t find it compelling.

Rich It was just stupid to me------I know all the military I was in the navy for 4 years. The stupid names, the pace of the story , the flow, boring, dragged, the dialogue. I cant agree this story was used for Mash. I read around 70 pages or so and DNF

David Putnam I think its just one of those books that hit certain readers a certain way, like Confederacy of Dunces. Both are stylistic, artistic but lack a cohesive story line, a Fictive Dream.

Theo Logos I tried and failed to read this book for years. Then I discovered the audiobook, and that opened it up for me. What had been disjointed read off the page worked when listening to it. Finished it and loved it. If you ever want to give it a last try, check out the audiobook and see if it works for you as well.

L.G. Cullens I'm not surprised by your take, as others have had similar issues. To me it was a matter of floating with the disjointed plot and chronology, and finding different characters perspectives coming together to enhance the satire. I found it not so much about the tragedy and farce of the war as it was about the economic farce of the profit-seeking war-mongers sans any human/ideological loyalties.
