Eh. Just Meh.

Jodi, Jodi, Jodi.. I know you don't write just for me.
But my heart is breaking a little bit.
You used to be my favorite author.
I bought your books, even in hardback, which is a rare thing for this frugal girl to do.
Sight unseen, I'd buy them, because I just knew they would be good.

About four books back or so, I began to feel they were becoming formulaic.
The twists were predictable, the tearjerkers at the end became cheap and redundant.
I hoped for more. I still believed.

With these last two books, though, my belief is fading.
You've been relegated to being an author I put on reserve at the library.
I still get excited, and hopeful, but in the end I'm usually just glad I didn't spend twenty-five bucks for the read.

I miss you, Jodi, and I think you've still got it.
I'm waiting!
--------------------

In regards to Lone Wolf itself, it just didn't do it for me.
I couldn't get into any of the main characters at all. Not the mom or the stepfather or the brother or the sister.
I did enjoy the parts about Luke, which surprised me b/c I expected to like those parts the least.
It's my understanding from seeing reviews on Amazon that this book was not well researched and wolf-lovers are all up-in-arms about the lack of research and correct wolf information. I don't know enough about wolves to have an opinion on this issue.

This is not a book I would want to pick up and read again. LOVE the early Picoult books though!

Ashley I can see where you are coming from.

Denise I also love Jodi Picoult's books. I've felt the same way about her last few books. While I've enjoyed reading them...they didn't have the same 'oompf" that her first novels did. I am in the middle of "lone Wolf" right now...and I am enjoying it..but at the same time, I feel as if I know how it is going to end. Hopefully, I am wrong and I get the satisfaction I used to get from the endings of her novels. I too have her on my list at the library...but I don't spend the money to purchase my own copies any more. I will continue to read her books...probably as soon as they come out....and keep hoping she can get back to what her earlier books were.

Me too, Denise. Let me know what you thought when you finish Lone Wolf!

Denise I just finished and gave it a 3 stars rating. It was sort of a 2.5 and I rounded it up. I felt like it was predictable. I enjoyed, as I always do, reading the story through the different characters, but I could not seem to get "attached" to any of the characters like I used to be able to do in Jodi's books. I too enjoyed reading Luke's parts. I found myself wishing they were longer. I felt as though the big "shocker" at the end wasn't there. The past few of Jodi's novels have been that way...although the ending of "Handle With Care" shocked me...I definitely wasn't expecting that to happen. I'm sure that it does get harder for Jodi to keep coming up with new and creative ways to end her novels.....and I know that I will continue to read them as soon as they are released...but as you said, I will be getting them from the library and not spending the cash on the hardcovers as I used to do.

Leeann Denise, sounds like we had very similar reactions to this book (and others!) Her characters were just not well developed at all this time. I can scarcely remember their names and I only read it a few days ago!

Crossing fingers for another good one soon- meanwhile, I am reading Anne Lamott's new book. :-)

Denise I haven't read any of hers..I'll have to look it up. I went through all the Jennifer Weiner books and getting through Elizabeth Berg's books. Hers I have trouble getting into when I start them. I made the mistake of picking one of hers next and it happened to be about a guy in a coma. That is making it really tough for me to get into it since it's reminding me of Lone Wolf.

Have you read Good Grief by Lolly Winston or Still Alice by (I think) Lisa Genova? Both very good!

Denise No..I'll look those up as well. I love finding new authors to read :-)

Denise They both sound really good so I added both to my "to-reads" list!

Tushar Mangl you are so right.
