it was amazing

Gone Girl is one of the most craftily plotted stories I've read in some time. My original gracing of stars was going to be 4. I'm not quite certain when it became 5. It might have been when I realized I didn't have all the answers. It could have been when I went to swipe from one page to the next on my Nook and...I can't tell you what happened as it could ruin it for you.

Gone Girl sports an old story line. On the day that Amy and Nick are to celebrate their 5th anniversary, Amy disappears. Gone Girl! but where did she go? It's amazing that a such a simple, nothing new story can become such a pleasure to read when handled by a gifted author.

Gone Girl is a thriller but one that builds slowly and is sly. Flynn uses some interesting devices to move her story forward and I loved them. There is the diary that Amy kept which gives us a picture of her life with Nick and the days leading up to her disappearance. There are limericks, quizzes and even a ritual anniversary treasure hunt with clues. There's Amy's parents, psychologists who have written a series of books about a character named of all things, Amy, Amazing Amy at that. There's Nick's twin sister Go, short for Margo, and his dying mother and father who suffers from memory loss. There are so many great passages that I wish I could read them all to you. Like when a female character is introduced as having "an unnecessarily loud voice, a bit of a bray, like some enchanted, hot donkey". Or when another female is depicted in this passage;"I stared at the hollow of her neck and wondered why she wasn't wearing a noose of pearls. Women like these always have thick strands of pearls to click and clack. I could smell her, though, a female scent, vaginal and strangely lewd."

I was on the edge of my seat one minute, smiling the next, getting socked by an OMG moment yet another, and in the end, I held back not wanting to finish because I didn't want it to end. Gone Girl is a psychological roller coaster ride that reminds me of...Sorry! Can't say as I don't want to give too much away.

My sincere thanks to Crown Publishing for providing Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn in e-galley format, due to be published June 5, 2012.

Chris 5 stars! This sounds like a winner, too bad we have to wait until June! :-)

Carol I know...I'm dangling a goodie before your eyes! Keep it on your list. It's a very interesting read.

Cynthia Glad to see your very positive review. I have a (regular) galley but haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

Carol Let me know when you do!

Cynthia I will!

Kats Ooooh, this sounds good! I do like a well crafted mystery. Will put this on my TBR - out in England on May 24th, so may just pip you to the post, Chris! :-)

:-)) Lucky duck you're getting it a month earlier! I always wonder about that.

Kats Well, hardly a month, only about 10 days.... and given my reading pace these days I will buy it on the day and start it.... but then not finish it until November. Sometimes I wonder if I have ADD. Seriously.

Carol Oh, I think you'll have to finish it quickly!

Cynthia You have me itching to read this.

Jill Carol, just read your review. It rocks! Of course, I'm dying to know what it reminds you of. I loved the adrenalin rush...loved it all, except the ending...

Suzanne I love the layering of wording here: Nick’s twin sister’s nickname is “Go, parents are either dying, “going, or their memory is “going, and his wife is “gone. Plot devices sound fun. But “hot donkey -- that’s just disturbing.

Jill Suzanne, what a perceptive observation! I hadn't even thought of that layering...

As Jill stated, very perceptive of you...this book is just full of it! Such fun...

Suzanne My brain looks for patterns. I can’t help it. It’s a compulsion completely against my will. I’m defenseless against it.

This type of clever writing does sound like fun, but I am not a mystery/thriller fan at all, usually, and her other book seems to have creeped out a lot of people. So I don't know. I'll keep Gone Girl in mind -- on the back mental burner until more reviews are in. I enjoyed both your reviews, though, Jill and Carol.

Jill Suzanne, for what it's worth, I"m also not a mystery/thriller fan. I did like Tana French's first book and I liked Defending Jacob. I need psychological underpinnings rather than "who done its." I was not crazy about Flynn's other two books and I DID like this one. This one is way clever and is more about a toxic marriage than it is a traditional mystery.

Carol Jill stated This one is way clever and is more about a toxic marriage than it is a traditional mystery.

Right on Jill!

I'd say I'm a thriller fan who leans towards a good story with those psychological underpinnings. I don't care as much about who done it as to what makes them tick.

Robin Nice review, Carol. I'm halfway through and loving it. I just wish I could be as clever as Suzanne (never realized all of the "go" references). Have to admit, though, I keep thinking the title of the book as "You Go, Girl."

Love you're title Robin!

I honestly think this could warrant a second read. I'm certain I missed those subtleties first time around.

Robin I agree; if I didn't have so many books to read I would start all over again.

Jeanette (Ms. Feisty) Great review, Carol! You've done an excellent job of being thorough without giving too much away. I too was torn between 4 and 5 stars, but couldn't explain why I went with 4 stars without including spoilers.

Diane I am reading this now! It is un-put-downable!

Carol :) enjoy Diane!
