A Papal Thriller:
The process involved in the election of a Pope is something I have given little or no thought to in the past which is why I found this book extremely interesting.

The author takes us carefully, with captivating writing, through the rites and rituals of a “Conclave which turns out to be way more involved that I had ever imagined, that is, if I had ever given it a thought before.

While this book has nothing whatsoever to do with murder and police procedure it is as much of a suspense thriller as I have ever read. It is a page turner of epic proportions.

But it is the kind of book one must approach with an open mind, any pre conceived notions will spoil it for you. If you are a fervently religious Roman Catholic you could very well be appalled, but I would urge you to read it all the same simply because:
“Out of the crooked timber of humanity, no straight thing was ever made… (Pg. 235)

Terence M - [Quot libros, quam breve tempus!] Robert Harris is a fine author, Morgan, and yours is a fine review!
I haven't read/listened to "Conclave", but it is the sort of book I think I would enjoy, so I will buy it in audiobook format and add it to the towering tbr pile!

Morgan I hope you do, Terry. I thought it was amazing/shocking/amazing/loved it if one can 'love' such a book.

Terence M - [Quot libros, quam breve tempus!] I have just found it on Audible, so it is on my "Wishlist" there and I will buy it if I can't borrow it.

Terence M - [Quot libros, quam breve tempus!] Well ... I had to actually buy it and it's now entrapped on my iPhone!

Morgan Oh no. I'm so sorry. Hope it will have been worth it. Hope it didn't cost too much. It's not a very long book if that makes a difference on Audible.

No, it was not expensive, thanks Morgan. I pay A$11.65 for each Audible audiobook, regardless of title or length. I am happy with this deal, which is why I buy too many Audible audiobooks each year!

Adrienne Morgan. Great rating. I really enjoyed reading this book. And admiring the research that went into writing it. Cheers

Morgan Thanks Adrienne :) It certainly opened my eyes A LOT!

Adrienne Morgan I appreciate that - all the fixed procedures for electing a new Pope. I wondered how he gained all the inside information!

Morgan No idea...maybe we could ask the author - or is it all public knowledge? If it is I guess you'd have to seek it out. I never even gave it a thought before this book.

Joe Krakovsky That was a good review, Morgan. A similar title which I rad is
The Making of the Popes 1978: The Politics of Intrigue in the Vatican.

Morgan Thanks Joe. The whole thing is such a mystery with all the Secrecy. Fascinating to me.

Leila Really interesting review Morgan. Although fairly familiar with the routine when a new Pope has to be elected, I found this book told me much more about it. What surprised me I think was the possibilities for Cardinals to get together not only before they are all locked up but the changing politics within the locked room of the whole process as different names appear and votes keep changing. Sometimes the final result can be a surprise as in the election of our present Pope who seems to be truly a man of the people. There are some interesting films on Netflix all about the last two Popes and one about our present Pope which shed further light on the process.

Kathy Great review Morgan. When I read this, I had a very basic idea of how the Pope is selected, so I was fascinated by the details. It was one of the best thrillers I've read.

Thanks Leila. I had NO idea about the process involved before I read this book. I am longing to see the new movies but I don't have Netflix. Maybe they will be on DVD at some point.

Paul Weiss Excellent review, Morgan. I just finished it myself (having chosen it because of this review) and was thrilled with it.
