really liked it
bookshelves: adventure, non-fiction, biography, mental-health, tragedy

Another well-written book by Jon Krakauer, this was a fascinating, and often sad, glimpse into the spiral down of an idealistic young man, Christopher McCandless. Even when his decision-making didn't make sense, the reader still somehow identifies with the internal struggle this young man was going through, and his journey becomes theirs to take with him. It seems terrible to say I enjoyed this book, but I really did. If nothing else, it allowed me to identify with someone else's struggles, while seeing from a safe distance the fallacy in their thinking.

Debbie W. Nice review, Kat! I enjoyed Krakauer's Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mount Everest Disaster, but I haven't read this book. I did read The Wild Truth: A Memoir by Christopher McCandless's sister, Carine McCandless which wasn't that impressive.

Kat Thanks, Debbie! Into Thin Air is one of my favorites! This one was very good, and I liked it as well - not quite as much, but it was still really interesting and well-written. I didn't know his sister had also written a book, but it sounds like one I could miss!

Brenda ~The Sisters~Book Witch Great review, Kat!

Kat Thank you, Brenda!!

Regina Looks like you appreciated this one a bit more than I did. I'm so glad you found empathy in the story!

I totally understand what you said in your review about how he comes off on the page. He's not terribly likable! I think the one-time psych major in me found his thought processes fascinating though, even if I wanted to shake sense into him!

Haha! Foiled by Regina! 😂 It's not a book for everyone, but it's still a pretty fascinating journey into someone's misguided thought processes. Sounds like a good time, right? 😁

Thank you, Kat! He's not the easiest person to feel sympathetic towards, but it's always good practice to see the world through someone else's eyes for a bit.

You really captured this one, Kat. I remember reading it about 20 years ago and thinking how easily CM made some not-to-well thought out decisions that tragically changed and shortened his life. It's so simple to imagine how that could happen. Great review.

Kat Thanks, Bob. It really was a tragic story - I agree. His idealism and short-sightedness cost him so much. I thought Krakauer did an excellent job telling his story.

Tom Stewart "it allowed me to identify with someone else's struggles, while seeing from a safe distance the fallacy in their thinking". There's both rhythm and truth to your beautiful wording.

Kat Thank you, Tom. Much appreciated! :)

MarilynW I haven't visited information about this young man, in a long time. I might give this book a listen...great review, Kat!

Kat It's a truly fascinating story. I wanted to reach into the pages to try to reason with him to make different decisions! Thanks, Marilyn! 💗

It's an excellent book and a very good movie was based on it as well! I hope you get a chance to read it! 💖

Rowan MacDonald Great review, Kat! I've been wanting to read this ever since seeing the film years ago.

Thanks, Rowan! As is so often the case, the book is better than the movie, though I did like the movie as well. The book just offers more insight into his state of mind and experience.
