it was amazing

What an awesome tale. Written in the 19th century, but telling a tale about the late 1600s during the times of Charles II and James II. Our hero, John Ridd is a simple, albeit wise and honorable farmer who as a young lad meets Lorna Doone of the dreaded, evil outlaw family of higher born Doones, and it's love at first sight.

There are lots of ups and downs and surprises, along with the author's gorgeous prose describing the english countryside and farmlife. You have to pay attention though, as none of the characters are wasted. What might seem as inconsequential events and characters earlier in the story are brought back in full circle to the tale, along with a great mystery about Lorna's past as the author slowly peels out the many layers of his story.

Highly highly recommended. If you enjoy Thomas Hardy, Charlotte Bronte or Dickens this will probably be right up your alley.

It's got today's date for a edit date.

Misfit I fixed a small typo.

That will do it! :)

Misfit I liked this a lot. I imagine it can be found free now at Project G.

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ It is on Gutenberg; I just downloaded yesterday thanks to this review. Hopefully it won't go into my Kindle black hole category. It looks good but I have several other books that need to be read before it!

Misfit From what I can recall it was a slow start getting used to his prose, so a good idea to start it when the thinking cap is on :)

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ I've found that's the case with a lot of 19th century literature. Sometimes it's hard to get past the language usage barrier and lose yourself in the story.

Misfit Yep. But usually so worthwhile in the end.

Tracey Hello I have just started this up to chapter 10 and I admit to finding the language archaic. I will press on with it as it is a read a long with some friends in my GR group and also because your review has me ever hopeful for something special. (eventually) :)

Been a few years, but I did struggle with the language at the first until I finally got with the flow of it and the story.

Tweety *sigh* I love your review, this is one of my all-time favorite books, I've lost count of how many times I've read it.

Tweety So do I.

Thomas Excellent review. I read this in college and as I loved all things Dickens ( an excellent comparison), I devoured this book. An English major and retired English high school teacher I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good love story.
