really liked it
bookshelves: fantasy

I’ve never been that interested in Greek mythology, to be honest. I knew a few of the names and (fewer) of the stories, of course. But I would definitely consider myself a newbie.

So as a newbie, did this book work for me? It did. Partially.

This is essentially a short story collection, told from the beginning. I enjoyed most of the tales. Some more than others, sure. But generally I felt entertained throughout the book.

But I’m not sure how I’m supposed to keep all the names and their relationships straight. In the end I had marked down 308 names. 308! It’s just too much information to end this read with a feeling of having learned a lot.

I’m probably more a fan of the author now, than of the myths of ancient Greece. Stephen Fry has such a charming narrative voice, he could basically tell me about anything, and there would be a high probability of me enjoying it immensely.

He did pique my interest in mythology, though. And this, ultimately, makes the book a success. I might have not learned as much as I had initially hoped for. But I definitely enjoyed it much more than I thought.

His narration of the audiobook, by the way, is even more fun than only reading the words he so eloquently and humorously put on paper. But because of the many names I had to revert to actually reading the book, in order to be able to make some notes. So this book is definitely marked down for a re-read (or rather listen), before I pick up the second one. Because this I surely will. Well done, Mr. Fry!

This has been a buddy-read with Susy, Grant, Allan, Lata, Rebecca, Amanda and Jeff.

Trish Ha!

Dennis I can see the huge smile on your face from here. :) Okay, throw all your Stephen Fry recommendations at me!

Trish OK, er hat einige geschrieben, in denen er seine Vergangenheit behandelt. Die hab ich (noch) nicht gelesen, aber das hier ist schon auf meinem iPhone: Moab Is My Washpot (Memoir #1) by Stephen Fry

Last Chance to See In the Footsteps of Douglas Adams by Mark Carwardine Stephen Fry in America by Stephen Fry Rescuing the Spectacled Bear by Stephen Fry

Bin gerade unterwegs. Danke erstmal! :)

Trish Kein Thema. :D

Jeff Yes. That one.

Trish You're lucky it wasn't the other one. ;P

Dennis Gotta love her and her always cheerful nature, huh?!

Trish I like laughing. It's better than frowning all the time. Better wrinkles. More satisfying too (if you do it like I do it).

Jeff It's what follows the smile (and maniacal laughter) that has me worried.

Dann gibt..."

Thanks! I'm going to add them all, except for the last one.

Trish Tsk tsk tsk.

Dennis Never satisfied ...

Trish I am satisfied ... when you read them all. ;P

Dennis Read and love!!!

I'm so proud of him. *sniffles*

Mark Porton Stephen Fry is one of my favourite people. A very funny, intelligent man. Great speaker, debater, presenter and comedian. Agree with your comments Dennis, the weight of the number of characters was a bit much - excellent review. He's also a Prostate Cancer brother and does a lot to spread the message to us blokes.

Dennis He seems to be a fine guy, indeed. Looking forward to see more of his work. :)

Cathy I used to obsessively watch his quizshow. So damn funny.

Trish I'm still watching QI. Sandy is hilarious (though I miss Stephen).

Cathy Oh, here, whilst watching some QI highlights just now, I came across this clip of Stephen talking about Mythos:

Mark Porton Yes Stephen was a great host of QI, quit witted and a massive intellect

Trish Cathy wrote: "Oh, here, whilst watching some QI highlights just now, I came across this clip of Stephen talking about Mythos: "

Yep, that's a nice one.

Dennis Cathy wrote: "Oh, here, whilst watching some QI highlights just now, I came across this clip of Stephen talking about Mythos: "

Just watched it. Thanks for sharing. :) Yes, it was nice. It was also a little awkward, near the beginning.

Terence M - [Quot libros, quam breve tempus!] An enjoyable review, Dennis, and I agree with the comment above by my GR friend and fellow Aussie, Mark Porton!

Dennis Thank you, Terence! I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)
