it was amazing

This was fantastic. Read it in one sitting... It was so good/interesting how she weaved these 11 stories together. The stories were separate from each other (they were standalone stories) but connected. I find the concept very appealing....if any other readers could tell what any other short story collections where I can find this writing style I would appreciate it! I got the novel, The Wonder Years (Lauren Acampora) under the promise of a similar style (intersecting lives of one small town...these interwoven stories, but this was 100X better.

And here's a very nice and insightful interview of Ms. Ogawa given in The New Yorker in 2005:

George Good to read that you liked the book so much. Thanks for the link. I enjoyed the short interview article.

Teresa As far as interlocking stories go, I was going to recommend "Winesburg, Ohio" to you; but I see you've already read it. :)

Yes, but it's probably worth another read because I do not remember much of it other than I know I liked it and the characters were connected. I was thinking of another...do you think it is of that style..but I already read it but it was years ago....and you read it too (!): The Bridge Over San Luis Rey (Wilder).

From what I remember, yes, I can see how the Wilder can be compared to the Anderson. Also Steinbeck's Cannery Row and Elizabeth Strout's Olive Kitteridge.

JimZ Hi Teresa, I do not know how I got my hands on this book (who recommended it to me) but please read my review of "Other People's Love Affairs"...a collection of short stories by an Anglo-American, D. Wystan Owen. I think it was billed as stories being interconnected...I will leave that to you to determine the veracity of that statement if you read it, but I do hope you read it! There is not a dud on the 10 stories. His writing is exquisite. His style reminds me of Willam Trevor (so it has to be good!).

Teresa Thanks for this. I hope to get to it one of these days -- that's a high recommendation!

Ilse On interlocking stories (I cannot compare writing style as I haven't read Ogawa yet), I would recommend The Springs of Affection by the Irish writer Maeve Brennan, Jim - stories on two couples.

JimZ I read The Springs of Affection 19 years ago...I gave it an A+....and now can't remember anything about it. :( I will have to re-read it (first I have to get another copy....).

JimZ My pleasure Emmkay..it is frustrating that she has other works published but not translated into English...I very much like her works.

Laysee Jim, yes, this is a fabulous set of stories cleverly interwoven together. Great review!
