This novel explores how the death of a fourth friend impacts the lives and friendships of three remaining older women. I found it to be a difficult read, but not how you might think. I could not summon the ability to care at all and was immensely bored; it was impossible to identify with the two-dimensional stereotypes (slovenly academic, washed-up actress and someone who seemed to be so wholly defined by the fact they are a mistress) and even more difficult to try to retain interest in the plot.

There was quite a bit of buzz around this one when it came out that I had high hopes, which may account (in part) to how underwhelming I found this read. I don’t really recommend it and have no quotes.

Jaq Thank you so much for your review, I felt the same way! I couldn't believe how tedious the story was, or how one dimensional the characters were.

It's so nice to hear someone agrees! I kept thinking that surely there was a hook or there would be a turn in the story to make the lead up worthwhile but was left disappointed. Often with a book that isn't to my taste I can imagine a friend who may find enjoyment from it, but I genuinely was stumped trying to think of anyone I could recommend it to.

I definitely think the praise it had at the time coloured my anticipation but I can't help wish I hadn't picked it up :(

Jaq i felt the same, I kept going with it, waiting for some revelation, or just something to happen that wasn’t domestic drudgery. I also thought is this it?

Karen McCulloch Agreed, I was reading all the other reviews and wondering what I'd missed.

So glad to hear Karen.....

Sherrie Thank you for this. I kept wondering what I was missing. I too gave it one star, but you were nicer than I was!😉

Oh Sherrie it was just an odd book

Margaret Cooley I agree completely. I only finished it because it was a book club choice and I am looking forward to seeing how the others felt about it. I literally had to force myself to finish it.

Catherine I hated it. It was banal and ridiculous. The Guardian gave it's review as ' The Big Chill 'with a dash of ' Big Little Lies. I DONT THINK SO.
