4.5 stars

It is certainly true that this book has stirred up much controversy, much of it unwarranted, and has also resulted in physical threats being made against the author. In fact, the threats were such, that the publisher felt it necessary to cancel the book tour this author was about to embark upon. Both Jan and I find that totally appalling. If this tactic is not one of censorship, we don't know what is and the journey the naysayers have vehemently embarked upon have made for a frightening situation for All authors. Never did we think that this state of affairs would ever rear its ugly head but it has and we are both incensed that a book that is a work of fiction is being treated in such a manner.

My review...
I think every time one reads of the plight of those living in disadvantages countries, one can't help but being ever so grateful for living in America. We have so many advantages that we take for granted and it takes a book such as this to make us realize that life is ever so difficult for those who want very much to be part of the American dream.

There has been much written about this book with an overblown controversy that hinges on the rim of censorship which is quite disturbing. I feel that any book, written by anyone of any race color, creed etc that opens one eyes to the feeling of empathy and knowledge about the plight of others, is a book worth reading. Certainly the main characters in this story displayed the struggle and the resolve of the human spirit in their attempt at finding a better life for themselves and their family.

In this book we saw the good and the evil, which of course dwells across the microcosm of our earth. We felt the struggle. We saw the dangers, the evil that cartels do bring to the people with their blood thirsty hold on those who try to survive under their domain. Fear is an awful thing and the people who live under this fear are intimidated, coerced and terrorized. This is certainly not the way the human spirit can possibly survive when everyday brings murder, mayhem, and evil of the most heinous kind.

I do applaud this author for alerting many of us to the dangers people undergo trying to come to this country particularly from South and Central America. She made it readily comprehensible why the need to escape to a better world is the impetus for so many. I, for one, think she did quite well in her mission to tell a story, albeit a made up one, to bring some enlightenment to those who chose to read her book.

Those who chose to pan this book, as is their right, will and do overlook the intention of the author to tell a story. This is not a non fiction book nor is it the do all and tell all of the plight of those who look to America as their salvation. Those who judge this as more than that have either not read the book or jumped on the bandwagon of becoming "woke." It is truly a shame and a travesty that we have come to this.

“That these people would leave their homes, their cultures, their families, even their languages, and venture into tremendous peril, risking their very lives, all for the chance to get to the dream of some faraway country that doesn’t even want them.

Thank you, Peter! In the back of my mind I can't fathom why the reaction we see is so vile and vehement. Bottom line is that it is just a story.

Angela M Excellent review, Maryalyce. I think the author does a great job of bringing awareness to the migrant situation. I couldn’t put it down. Like you and Jan, I’m saddened for Cummins because of the threats of violence . I think she’s the scapegoat . There may very well be issues within the publishing industry with regard to Latino authors, but I don’t see how this is Cummins fault . Thanks for your thoughts.

I so agree, Angela. I think she does shine a light on the migrant issue in a way that brings empathy to a horrible situation. What social media has done to this author and her book is utterly appalling. Thank you!

Sara I could not agree more that the reaction to the book has been frightening. No matter how much you disagree, death threats and attempts to prevent people from reading it are disgusting events.

I have, however, decided not to read it myself, based on several trusted friends whose reviews often help me weed out books that are not for me. I think all the hype around it will increase sales, but I doubt that will offset the horror of the experience for Cummins.

Marialyce Jayme wrote: "Such a heartfelt review and I agree 100%! Well said!! ❤️"

Thanks so much Jayme! It pains me to think that some are trying to censor a work of fiction.

Thank you Sara, for your response. I, fear for our future as readers and book lovers if these behaviors are permitted to continue. You are correct that this poor author has been put through some horrible things.

Jim Puskas Any book that gets vehemently attacked from both left and right must have something going for it. Cummins stands accused of inaccuracies, sensationalism, cultural hijacking and insulting Mexican officials; on the other hand, her assertion that most migrants are terrified refugees rather than economic opportunists does not sit well with the right wing in the USA. I agree that the book has numerous shortcomings, both as a piece of literature and as social commentary; but threats are totally unacceptable in our supposedly free society. And claims that as non-Latinx she had no business writing this story is ridiculous.

Thank you, Jim, for giving us the voice of reason. This is nothing more than a fiction book. So many have lost their minds.

Cheri Excellent review, Marialyce, I share your sentiments about the book and the backlash - especially that the censorship has led to the cancellation of her book tour. I'm fine with people who read a book not liking it, but the negative links and comments I got after I read and reviewed this seemed to mostly come from people who hadn't read it joining the bandwagon for reasons that had nothing to do with the book.

Thank you, Cheri! I so agree with everything you stated. I can't help but think this was all started by a person whose books have not been as well received so perhaps there is a certain amount of the green eyed monster underlying a lot of this.

Meredith (Trying to catch up!) I love your review and how you address the controversy surrounding this book, Marialyce! I can't wait to read this!

Victoria I love that you brought up the subject of empathy, that's one of the things that has troubled me about this controversy (among others), is the idea that only a Latino writer can have the empathy to write this? Is not the human condition something we can all tap into?
Thank you for a thoughtful review, Marialyce.

How bad can a book be when it engenders feelings of sadness and empathy for those who are less fortunate than we are? Thank you, Victoria!

Dorie - Cats&Books :) Great honest review, I will get to this one eventually, it's on my list but I didn't request it :)

Carol Excellent and balanced review, Marialyce. Sadly, it doesn't take much to set off online trolls. Look at what happened to Gayle King.

It is sad, Carole. These people sit faceless behind computer screens and spew their hatred and vileness.

Luvtoread (Trying to catch up) Fabulous and passionate review, Marialyce! I hope to read this book!!💛

Elaine Mullane || Elaine and the Books I think you hit the nail on the head, Marialyce. The intent of the author was to tell a story and shine a light on a particular topic; I said the same in my review. I believe her when she says that Lydia could be from anywhere. She is a vessel for a much larger group. And I too think the treatment the author is received is appalling. This 'cancel culture' we now live in is so disheartening. Great review - thank you for sharing it.

Thanks so very much, Elaine. I am reading a book right now that is fiction about the sex trafficking of young girls trying to cross the border. According to cancel culture, this author also should be excoriated because she never has experienced sex trafficking herself. I find this state of affairs truly appalling.

Monique Thomas Great review. I didn’t hear about the controversy surrounding it but I am appalled that was the case.
