A nice enough tale about a lost romance but I was not able to see why so many people have raved about it. Maybe because I am not romantic enough to seriously believe two people could carry a torch for each other for fifty years. A few nostalgic thoughts maybe but not enduring love. And I felt sorry for Walter having to put on a brave face while his much loved wife indulged in a teenager fantasy.

Not knocking the whole book though. There were lovely parts about food and really interesting bits about history. There was just too much about romance for my taste! That's just me though ( obviously, since the ratings are through the roof!)

Luffy Sempai From your review, I sense that I would also not take to the book. Great review! These romance books can sometime be a drag.

Phrynne My view exactly:)

Edyta Hmm I'm also not very romantic so that doesn't bode well. I do have this book as it was very highly recommended. I'll push it back on my list and get to it when I get to it (probably when I need an S book or flowery cover lol)

Phrynne It does have a very attractive cover!

Dale Harcombe Helpful review Phrynne.

Alex Cantone Good review - not one for me by the sound of it.

Mary Kay I also felt bad for Walter. I thought that their 50-year-long marriage was much more romantic than a teenage infatuation.

Phrynne That's very true Mary Kay!

Vanessa Marks Agree

Harsh I agree to your point. The book has it's fair share of good moments, but nothing very unexpected or out of the world happens as the story unfolds towards the end.

Helen Nichole Yes! My heart went out to Walter every time he was mentioned!

Cailyn Thompson Lol same the 50 years thing really got me

Crosky And a terrible romance at that! Female character was betrayed, he was too to some extent but if he loved her as he claimed he would have, um, knocked on her door to hear it from her instead of believe words in a letter.

True:)

Crosky Agree, Mary Kay and all who felt bad for Walter. And agree with Harsh that it had some moments but...

Nayonika Roy I completely resonate with your words!

Sushma Exactly! I'm over these love-at-first-sight, forever longing, sad fate, love till the last breath despite having a family and kids... Uhhhh!

Melissa And he just ends up in the northeast and they find each other?!

Linda C I have about 100 pages left, just got to the first major plot reveal (if we can call it that) and find it all so absurd. Roya is just annoying, pining for 60 years over her high school boyfriend, not wanting to have another baby, not wanting to be fully invested in the life she chose because it all just so painful... blah, blah, blah.

Diana I felt the same way. The whole book was very melodramatic and you never really get the feeling that Roya even loved Walter. He just seemed like a nice guy she settled for but never truly cared about.

Daidipya Sharma My thoughts exactly! Roya was annoying character for me for a major 3/4th portion of the book. I loved Walter Archer. He is so sweet and caring and calm and “all american. One thing I have to agree with though, Royal does find lovers very quickly

Jonida Hadri I love romantic novels but this didn't really click with me. I read the book in 3 sitting alright, but I can't say I respect any of the main characters, like I don't think any of them will remain with me for a long time like let's say Jane Eyre or Ursula from Garcias.

Jennah I agree. I felt so bad for Walter throughout the book. The poor man was such a green flag
