After a brief pause amid the breath of petrified nostrils, I devoured Blood Meridian's ย last pages. I closed the book and felt as if I had just stepped off a smokey crimson-red dance floor. Did I just dance with the devil? Oh yeah. This was an exhausting, grotesque dance. A ground zero of transgression. Eyes were burning, lungs on fire. There is something to be said about a book that can leave you breathless even after reading it for the 4th time.
Blood Meridian is probably one of the most violent, brutal, nihilistic portraits of the human condition at its worst ever written.
Roughly based on historical events that took place in the middle of the 19th century, the story revolves around a group of militia scalp hunters riding through the Mexican-American borderlands, leaving piles of bodies behind them after committing the most horrific atrocities one can imagine, and those one can't. This is the oldest story of them all, right? From the rotting womb of the earth, rising the hand of man, turning the pages of history, leaving nothing but destruction. Are we destined to kill and destroy? Is it rooted deep in our core?ย

The contrast between the extreme violence and ๐พ๐ค๐ง๐ข๐๐ ๐๐๐พ๐๐ง๐ฉ๐๐ฎ'๐จ ย breathtaking writing in this brutal masterpiece is probably one of my favorite things about it. Always was. McCarthy's writing ย is haunting, immersing. The landscape descriptions are otherworldly and bewitching. Where smoke meets the sky and the grass is dying on bitter bone, in the middle of it all, there is THE JUDGE. The eye of the storm, the agent of the devil himself, perhaps. He is the epitome of nihilism and annihilation, and yet the most compelling character in the book.
This literary piece of art might not be for everyone. It's not an easy book, however, probably one of the most rewarding I've ever read, one that forever changed the way I experience literature. It still haunts my thoughts to this day.

Quotes Debbie Y Liked

“Whatever exists, he said. Whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent.
He looked about at the dark forest in which they were bivouacked. He nodded toward the specimens he'd collected. These anonymous creatures, he said, may seem little or nothing in the world. Yet the smallest crumb can devour us. Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth.”

Thank you for the recommendation. I haven't yet read The Road. I know that it is brutal and bleak, and while I like those kinds of stories, I need to be in the mood. So far I've only read No Country For Old Men, but I will add this and The Road to my list.

Thank you, Paul! I couldnโt agree more, itโs fantastic!

Thank you, Anna! Are you really? Yay! Go for it, this was my 4th time reading it and it was probably the best of them all. This book reveal itself the more you read it. Iโd say enjoy, but we both know thereโs nothing joyful about it :) ๐ค๐ค

Thank you, Ben! I always find it challenging to share my thoughts when it comes to my favorite books. Like Stephen King said, words shrink things that matter. I appreciate your words :)

Aw, thank you, Dean! Yes, itโs a masterpiece, a superior piece of art :)

Itโs not because itโs so complex, and Iโm not one to write analysis of any sort, I prefer to share my experience with it instead. Thank you so much, Sophie! Itโs one of my all time favorite books, so I appreciate your words, truly. ๐ค

Even after the 4th time Iโm still baffled by it! Thank you!:)

Haha, indeed :) ๐ Judge Holden is the essence of the abyss! Probably the worst of all villains. Thank you, Alan, the 4ths read was the most rewarding, I must say.

Thank you, Kai, much appreciated! Yes, I was just saying how I prefers to talk about the reading experience rather than writing a dissection of the whole book. I could be here all day, talking about it, LOL :)

Thank you, dear Zainab! It is indeed a work of art! :) ๐ค๐ค

This is my favorite book by McCarthy, although I love everything by him. This is superior :)

Thank you, Andrew! :) Yeah, definitely, especially the last 50 pages or so felt more revealing this time. It still required me to pause and catch my breath!

Thank you, my friend! ๐ค๐ค I couldnโt agree more, I love everything written by him :) ๐ค

Thank you, Leeanne, you should! ๐ค๐ผ If youโve never read anything by him, I would suggest not to start with this book, though ๐ค๐ค

Haha, I have no problem with that claim and never will! LOL. I did hear about the movie adaption and Iโm with you on that, I hope theyโll do the book justice and wonโt mess it up! This is a real challenge and I hope they wonโt disappoint, although I highly doubt itโll be half as good as the book is. Yes, Iโm protective when it comes to McCarthy :)

I did know that, I LOVE Watain! So cool that you brought that up:) ๐ค๐ผ
