Aww that ending was perfect! Cardan in the mortal world is the funniest thing🤣. This was a brilliant end to the trilogy, it might even be the best one. I can faithfully say that I was addicted to this book, and flew through it.
I am suited to the shadows, to the art of knives and bloodshed and coups, to poisoned words and poisoned cups. I never expected to rise so high as the throne. And I fear that I am utterly unsuited for the task.
This is a decent trilogy, with the most complex, twisted characters that make for a very intriguing read. Granted, I don't think of this often; it's an in-the-moment sort of story for me. We have Jude, the most independent, power-hungry main character I've ever read. And I love it. This is how you write strong heroines people.
And Cardan of course.
"That boy is your weakness."
Arrogant, charming, handsome, careless and indulging. To be honest, I can't really encompass him who is Cardan in words. You just have to read it and see for yourself. A very unique main character, along with Jude. Trust me when I say you won't find tropes in these books.
"You've always scared me. You gave me every reason to fear your capriciousness and your cruelty. I was afraid of you even when you were tied to that chair in the Court of Shadows. I was afraid of you when I had a knife to your throat. And I am scared of you now."
Cardan looks more surprised than he did when I slapped him.
Holly Black's portrayal of faeries is the best I've ever read. From Madoc to Locke, the courts, the island and everything in between. She paints this rich, spellbinding world of greed, intrigue, power, politics and.. it's hard to put your finger on. There's a specific feeling with these books. The Folk of the Air trilogy has this beautiful atmosphere to it, rendering it so unlike other YA fantasy books. I understand why people love it.
Highly recommend, if you want something refreshing, unique, and sumptuous unlike the usual tropes in YA fantasy.

"As always with Holly Black, the beginning was far from slow, and I am reveling being back in Jude's world!
Somebody apparently died, which is annoying because it would've been fun to see how Jude exacted her revenge on this specific person....
AND TARYN'S BACK - she wants Jude to go back to faerie pretending to be her....... THE GOOD STUFF IS ABOUT TO BEGIN!! :D
No it has already begun the moment I started this"
