Alone (Detective D.D. Warren, #1)

This was an interesting read. Without giving anything away in my review, I will say that there are many plot twists and it's almost like a game of Clue. As each chapter passes by you learn more about each character. You learn more about Jimmy and Catherine, possible motivations and grievances, you learn more about Catherine's in-laws and what they would do to avenge their son, and what the string they would pull behind the scenes for him.
You most sympathize with Bobby, who was just doing his job to the best of his ability at the time and was drawn into the whole mess. The reason I only gave this three stars was partially because I didn't find most of the characters to be likable or as life-like as I typically like them. I think (again, without spoiling anything) some of the characters were very cold and it wasn't easy to have empathy for everything.
All in all, I think this turned into a book about not only survival, but also about what a mother would do for her child. I'm interested in seeing where the rest of the series will go.

I haven't started the next one yet, but I'm going to soon! We're reading the series in a book club. I think the plot for the first one was interesting, I just couldn't empathize with the characters, and you know when perspectives of certain characters can drag a little bit because you don't care about them as much as others? But I've heard good things about books later in the series.
