January Andrews is a supposedly successful, yet broke, writer of romance novels...who no longer believes in “happily ever after.

Gus Everett, a writer she knew in college, pens more serious novels, but is also experiencing “writer’s block for reasons of his own.

They end up living next door to each other and agree, on a bet, to attempt to write a novel in the other’s preferred genre.

Gus will take January through his “research process, and January will provide a crash course on “rom com.. because “happily ever after doesn’t matter if “the getting there sucks...

And, that is exactly WHY this romance did NOT work for ME, despite its many 5 star reviews. I did not feel ANY chemistry between them.

The getting there for me...kind of sucked!

The only part of the book that I enjoyed was when the two characters were discussing writing.

I found the rest of the dialogue to be TOO introspective, which grew boring, and was definitely NOT sexy.

The descriptions, were not any that I could relate to (a one piece bathing suit which made January look like a water logged popsicle tangled in toilet paper) ?? Huh?

And, January, when talking to herself, referring to herself as a “dumb bunny.

NOPE.

Could not relate to this one.

But, different books resonate with different people, so, if you have been wanting to read this one, by all means, you should! It obviously worked well for many other readers, as indicated by the many positive reviews.

Meredith (Trying to catch up!) Fabulous review, Jayme! Sorry you couldn't relate to this one. I have this to read and I am going to lower my expectations.

Jayme Thanks Meredith! I hope you have better luck with it! 🤞🏻

Jayme Thanks Sheyla! It didn’t work for me but I am glad that you enjoyed it! ❤️

Michelle I requested this one due to all the rave reviews and now I kind of wish I hadn't. Maybe I'll have better luck...but that description makes me cringe "water logged popsicle tangled in toilet paper" Eeek. 😦

Ceecee Oh no! Sorry it didn’t work out for you. 🤞next one 🌈❤️🌈

Jayme I got off EW after reading the 5 star reviews too-where is the delete button we keep requesting? 🤦🏻‍♀ Hope you have better luck with it, Michelle! 🤞🏻

Jayme Thanks Ceecee! Next! 🌈❤️🌈

DeAnn Sorry this was not a winner for us! We'll appreciate the next good one even more!

Jayme It just couldn’t compare the the others in this genre, that we have had the pleasure of reading together, DeAnn! ❤️

Bridgett Okay, you just made me feel so much better about not getting this ARC. Thank you! 😘

preoccupiedbybooks This is the lowest rating I've seen for this so far! Sorry you didn't enjoy it more Jayme, I'm starting it this week, so hopefully I will like it more 😂 That description is weird though...

Jayme Glad I could help, Bridgett! 😂

Jayme I hope you will have a better experience with it, Preoccupied! I just read Happily Ever After Playlist and Happiness For Beginners-this just paled in comparison, for me!

Jennifer ~ TarHeelReader I’m sorry you didn’t like it more, Jayme, and I’m not crazy about the things you mentioned - I’m not so sure about either! Thoughtful review and I hope you love your next one. I have this one coming up and hope I like it more. ♥️

Jayme Thanks Jennifer! I will look forward to your thoughts and do hope you will enjoy it more! ❤️

JanB Uh oh....I’m 20% in and enjoying it so far but we will see....
Fair and honest review Jayme, which I appreciate :)

Jayme Thanks Jan..well, I did not enjoy it from the start, Jan, so you may fare better than than me with this one! 🤞🏻

Susanne Nice honest review Jayme! I am honestly a bit worried.. you and I tend to agree. I see Jan's comment and I admittedly wonder.. Jan and I agree sometimes and sometimes we dont.. lolol!

Jayme It paled in comparison to Happily Ever After Playlist and Happiness For Beginners-both of which I just finished! I look forward to your thoughts, Susanne!

Tinichix (nicole) Hope you enjoy your next one more. It’s hard when you don’t feel the chemistry between the characters.

Kaceey Sorry this one didn’t work for you Jayme! Hope your next read is a five star🤩

Jayme Tinichix wrote: "Hope you enjoy your next one more. It’s hard when you don’t feel the chemistry between the characters."

Thanks Nicole! Their conversations seemed like they were between client and therapist to me..not sexy!

Jayme Thanks Kaceey! It just did not compare to the “Happily Ever After Playlist ! 🤷🏻‍♀

message 25: by Kym (new)

Kym Moore Good honest review Jayme. Sometimes, some characters don't gel well with the reader. I truly understand how you feel.

Jayme Thanks Kim!

Marialyce Three quarters of the way through and it’s starting to lose its original luster.

Jayme 🤦🏻‍♀ At least you enjoyed three quarters of it, Marialyce! I struggled for much longer! 🤗

MarilynW Great review Jayme...I still have this one to read 😳

Jayme 😳 well...maybe you will be one of the readers who love it!? 💕

MarilynW Jayme wrote: "😳 well...maybe you will be one of the readers who love it!? 💕"

We shall see 😂 🧟‍♀️💛🧟‍♀

Melissa ~ Bantering Books I gave this one three stars, too. Albeit for slightly different reasons than you. But I just think it’s a bit overrated.

message 33: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Great review! I was tempted to read this one despite not loving romance reads, but I think I'll pass.

Jayme Try The Friend Zone (book 1 of 2) and Happy Ever After Playlist (books 2) if you are looking to try a romance, Amanda!

Jayme Glad to have your company in the minority, Melissa! I will go check out your review! 🤗

message 36: by Kate (new) - rated it 3 stars

Thanks Katelyn! I don’t get the hype! 🤷🏻‍♀

Andrea I’ve got 50 pages to go, and sadly every word of your review rings true for me too.

Kris (My Novelesque Life) We meet again, Jayne. Although for me it’s 2.5 rounder up to 3.

Creya Casale | cc.shelflove I totally agree with you!! Where was the spark? I definitely didn’t end this book by saying “Omg Gus loved her sooooooo much. 👎

Cara Great review, Jayme💞!!!! Not every book is for someone, but kudos to you for trying it out!!!!! Although I loved this book, I totally see your points.

Jayme Thanks Cara! Thankfully her others did work for me! 🥰

ꕥ Ange_Lives_To_Read ꕥ OMG that popsicle and toilet paper thing had me scratching my head as well. It's a sad commentary on how bored I was with the book that I drifted off for a while trying to imagine where she came up with this analogy. (I mean the image itself is odd. Popsicle plus toilet paper? But how the hell could this equate to someone's appearance in a bathing suit?)
