5 stars! Let me just say this book was a real treat - it helped to end the reading slump I’ve been in all week! I don’t think I’ve read a book like this. Ever. It’s a whole lot of fun, is clever, creepy, and in parts very disturbing.
This novel follows a southern women’s book group - comically named “not quite a book club - in Charleston, South Carolina. While unfortunate for these ladies - and their families, a vampire disguised as a regular Joe Schmo moves into the neighborhood and begins insinuating himself into their lives, and their book club.
Bizarre deaths. Disappearances. Repulsive things that you wished you could unsee. Some parts may make you squeamish, it did me, but not enough that I put it down. There’s race issues, and a sexist attitude with the husbands that riled me a bit, but I liked how one woman in particular stood her ground not letting her husband, or their friends, gaslight her. I’m talking about the main protagonist Patricia, who not only witnessed gruesome crimes, but is terrifyingly attacked by a neighbor when setting out the trash after dark.
This story runs on the spooky side, not only does it have a vampire, it’s written with ghostly hauntings too!
Y’all can count me as Grady Hendrix’s newest fan. This will definitely go on my books to re-read shelf. I’ve already loaned it out to our daughter and a friend is waiting to read it when she finishes. It would be perfect as a book club pick. 🖤
