liked it

before she began writing this novel, JA said, ‘i am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like. and sis, if that aint the truth.

its not like i hated emma - there are far worse characters out there - its just that she annoyed me to no end. no one likes a inconsiderate/conceited busy-body and, to me, i never got the sense that emma was truly sorry for her actions in the end, which makes all of her meddling unredeemable.

but i appreciate mr. knightleys character as hes the ONLY person who calls emma out on her poor behaviour. hes the highlight of this entire novel for me - hes kind, considerate, and notices others. hes way too good for emma, in my opinion.

sadly, my lack of love for the title character prevented me from loving this, but i can understand the storys popularity throughout time and the appeal of JAs writing.

Teresa My least favorite Austen too!

Lucy I agree with a lot of your points jessica! Emma wasn’t one of my favourite reads by Austen

Sara My sentiments exactly. I read this years ago so I was wondering if the passage of time will make me feel any differently towards the book but this is exactly what I remember feeling!

jessica teresa - i seem to see that with readers. this isnt their favourite, but they still enjoy it.

lucy - so glad im not the only one who feels this way! im sorry you didnt love this very much either.

sara - yeahhhh, i think if i read this again in a few years, my feelings would still be the same. so dont feel bad!

Mary-Faith "sis, if that ain't the truth" i'm dying 😂 Emma is one of the Austen novels I haven't read and I hope to get to soon, but I've heard similar feedback from many people. Hahahaha

Reynita ★ The Night Reader ★ I didn’t finish reading this book :(

jessica mary faith - yeah, i mean, i think those that are big fans of austens writing will/do enjoy this, but im still undecided about how i feel about her, so i wasnt really impressed. i hope you like it more than i did though!

rey - awww. im sorry you didnt enjoy this. :(

Shawn-Joy Martin I've not finished yet, but am close, and I was afraid I would be alone in all these feelings!

Bev Mynott I adore all of Jane Austen's book except this one. I hate Emma with a vengeance! She is vain, silly, manipulative, and a thoroughly unlikeable character. She is the only one of Jane Austen's leading characters that I truly dislike. I love P&P, Persuasion, Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey and think S&S is kind of ok but the plot feels really contrived.

Kiran Great review! This was exactlyyy how I felt. Loved certain elements of the book, I just could not get over how unlikeable Emma was and the sorry excuse for growth the book tries to pass off.

Ezabel Wondering you decided on three stars instead of two when you went with 2.5
