Another one of Austen's books that I loved. Not my absolute favourite (that goes to Emma) but definitely up there. It contains some of her best quotes and a profound humour that has you cracking up.
This book is Austen's satire, Mansfield Park definitely gives you a glimpse into her mind but this gives you a good idea about the sort of sassy, well-informed, headstrong young lady Jane Austen was.Â
Sweet Catherine's naïveté was plausible but did not get annoying, because Austen (being the greatest ever!) knows just how far to push her reader's! This sweet little girl, was out on her own for the first time under the care of a superbly dull Mrs Allen and ever-present Mr Allen (he is definitely a sensible man). Trying to make sense of the big wide world after having been in comparative bliss and safety of her home.
I loved the friendship that was happening with Isabella and wanted to hope for the best but alas how must one expect 100% happiness for the heroine. Especially in a JA novel!
The hero, our beloved Mr Henry Tilney, is a force to be reckoned with from his first sentence, I wanted to see more of him and more of the banter that felt oh-so natural between him and our heroine.Â
I felt, sadly, that some bits were a little too flourished and wordy making some scenes go on for a long time. General Tilney was definitely a huge bore going on and on about materialistic things and trying oh-so hard to appear benevolent and humble. Poor Catherine was so confused by him it was hilarious. The arc with her brother started well but ended quite abruptly, I would have liked to see that ended a little more neatly.
The one thing that hurt me the most was no dialogue right at the end. Austen's dialogue about love, marriage and togetherness was something I was looking forward to but it was mainly a narrative the closed the novel, that may be to people's liking but it certainly was not to mine!
A great humourous read! Would definitely recommend for Austen lovers and everyone else!
