Gosh, this took me an age to read. What a huge disappointment too. I'm not sure why it's so well rated and regarded, maybe because of its content? I don't know. It can't be because it's beautifully written or because it's a great story, because it's not. It never really got going and never really went anywhere either, heck, the narrative never even made it to the end of the war! An arduous read that was overlong, overblown and, ultimately, left me feeling underwhelmed.

Didn't get on so well with this one, Leila. I found it all rather a bit drab. Evidently though, I'm in the minority. Glad you enjoyed it!

Yup, certainly a damp squib. Overrated and over-hyped. I've downgraded to a two-star rating now on second reflection. Thumbs down for this one.
