It's amazing to think that this was first published in 1937 Tolkien's modern classic AKA 'There And Back Again'. Peerless and beautiful, Middle England mash-up with Northern European mythology. Gandalf, Bilbo and a band of dwarves get caught up in dragon robbing plot... as in a plot to steal treasure off of a dragon! A story made even that better, for its usage of Hobbits, its look at conformity and standing out in a crowd, and personal growth! 8 out of 12.

Nor did I... although I'd never really thought of the publication date, before I checked it :)

Rosh (Off GR duty for a fortnight!) This is a series I have experienced only through the movie trilogy, though I did read the LOTR trilogy. Your review makes me wonder if I have the patience to read such a long tome today. Might try the audio version. So glad you loved it, Baba! :)

I read it as a standalone and not a prelude LOTR, and truly got to appreciate what a great story and would-building feat this is Rosh :)

It blindsided me how good it was Yun :)

Federico DN I'm not sure if I like the book or the movie better. I think I prefer the book, I mean the movie is visually outstanding, dialog, characters, all great. Epic even. They just made up so much stuff! How can you compare three movies with a tiny book that doesn't include any of that. Still, great book, I always remember the Battle of the Five Armies with sheer wonder. The movie did get that one right, even with all the license they took with it. Anyway. Great review Baba!
