it was amazing
bookshelves: own-ebook, own-print

This was a fantastically brutal, clever, and fast-paced read. It reminded me a lot of the movie Crimson Peak (starring Tom Hiddleson, aka Loki). Very gothic, a fair bit of squeamish gore; but so clever! Don’t be led astray by this cover; it’s very horror and does not let up. So be aware if that is not your thing then you may not be in the category of folks that love this novel.

I’d have made friends with the kitchen staff or just wandered down there to check on the food prep by now.
She can figure out that paint, mold, etc. can cause hallucinations but somehow she is ignorant to the food/drink risk?
Seems odd"

So I guessed a few things correct about the situation but I certainly didn’t take it as far or as creepy/icky/awful as the story has.
This is absolutely engrossing, fascinating, and horrifying all at once. I almost don’t want it to end because I’m just thrilled to be getting chills from it."

alittlelifeofmel I haven’t been as eager to read this as most people seem to be but Crimson Peak is one of my favourite movies so you’ve entirely sold me on this!

Mel (Epic Reading) I can’t think of anything more perfect to compare it to than Crimson Peak. It’s a bit more depraved perhaps; but overall less gory I’d say. The old Victorian house is essentially a character, and the women entering/investigating the family spurring romance is all perfectly in-line with a Penny Dreadful story. Honestly, the twists felt just like watching Crimson Peak the first time.
I also love Crimson Peak. As I was reading I was imagining done in that style with wonderful actors and can just see the amazing movie this would make. I normally don’t imagine books as movies but the descriptions and setting just seemed to lend my brain perfect images (and yes Hiddleson is one of the characters in my head!)
I honestly can’t say enough good things about this.
The only warning I’d give to someone going in is to expect the unexpected. It’s got some squeamish moments (again it is horror); but well worth it!

Tissie I've been interested in this one, thank you for your review!
