“The one who stole it from me. The one who broke me. The one who told me what I was and what I was going to be. He took everything that night. And he’s owned me ever since.
Liar Liar by T. L. Martin is a dark standalone high school romance which is not for the fainthearted. Whilst high on drama and angst, the story of Easton and Eva is actually quite beautiful. What begins as something tragic and harrowing is followed by the realisation of a deep connection between them. From incredibly heart-breaking and violent beginnings to a wildly passionate love story of survival. Liar Liar is intensely emotional and upsetting, yet it has a beating heart filled with love against the odds.
‘Everyone knows how this story ends. Because bad men don’t meet Karma. And bad girls don’t get their happily ever afters.
We were immediately grabbed by Liar Liar, our hearts breaking from the first page and throughout the story, as moments of sheer horror come to light. Filled with secrets, twists and high drama it kept us on tenterhooks as we followed Eva’s story from age 13, when her world changed. When life knocks you down onto your knees in the most brutal of ways, you build a shield to protect yourself and expect disappointment and bad behaviour, as if you deserve it or know of nothing else. When you protect yourself with the ‘I don’t give a toss attitude it’s often because the fragility of the heart needs to remain hidden. Eva’s attitude was fierce, sassy and coated in strength, however, she was incredibly vulnerable, scared and in need of positive human contact and protection. We loved her, rooted for her, and needed her to find love and peace of heart.
‘Easton isn’t just someone I want. He’s the solid ground beneath my feet.
The strength of the relationship between Easton and Eva was both lovely and full of hope, despite the gritty and raw surface appearance. Easton was a wonderful character. Sweet, strong, determined and a natural-born protector. He was guided by love and determination to save the girl who hid by his house. He never took his eyes off of her. Easton was written in such a refreshing way that he stole our hearts, this boy was genuine, a pure soul who loved without abandonment. He hadn’t had it easy either and he recognised the darkness, the hurt and the broken parts of Eva.
‘Stunning. Unbreakable. Two words I never thought would be associated with me, and yet he says them with such conviction I almost…I almost want to believe him.
In many ways, this dark ‘forbidden romance reminded us of the books we read and loved back in the day and it had a familiar aspect which we’ve definitely missed. We couldn’t put this books down; compelled by the writing and the characters. Without question, if you’re a fan of those provoking dark romances that at times are uncomfortable to read you will love Liar Liar by T. L. Martin.
‘She watched me before she caught onto me watching her. She listened before she knew I played for her. She was mine before I showed her she was mine. She consumed me before I even touched her.
