did not like it

Ew.
This is a 100% big nope from me.
From the gratuitous bad language (does every single character need to use the f-word twice in every sentence? Does the main character need to whisper "bitch" every time she walks past another woman?) to the wooden characters to the stomach turning conclusion, there's just nothing about this book that I can say that I liked.
I read this book because I had seen so many people say that it was amazing and had so many twists. Those people must not read the same thrillers or as many of them as I do because this one was just bad on many levels. Don't get me started on the author's lack of legal and police investigation authenticity, it is laughable. So. Many. Plot. Holes.
Another book that I'm glad I read on KU and didn't actually purchase. I'd recommend giving this one a big pass. I'm heading out to take an antacid so that I can get try to get this sick feeling out of the pit of my stomach.

Regina Yikes! Thanks for the heads up.

Savitri (IG: gymgirlreads) Oh my goodness! Placing this one in the back of my pile now!

JenLynette It’s soooo good!!! I don’t get how you couldn’t like it!!

Dakota DP Ignore the Karen post- this book is incredible!

Glad to help!

Jayne Great review, Melissa. I just received approval to review this audiobook from NetGalley. I listened to 20 minutes of the book and all I was hearing were swear words and descriptions about sexual acts. (HUH?)

FYI, The NetGalley audiobook app is AWFUL (the app stops the book between 4-6 times) and this time the app stopped the book at minute 20. (Usually the app doesn't stop the book until minute 60) When the book stops, the listener has to restart one's phone. Usually, I am very angry when the app stops but this time I was happy because the book was not what I signed up to review.
Sooo disappointing ! The description of the book is very compelling and all of the reviews that I had read (prior to your review) were very positive. What a letdown!

Melissa ~ Bantering Books I don’t think I would touch this book with a ten-foot pole. Thanks for taking one for the team, Melissa! :)

Yes to all of this! I agree that the NG app is pretty awful. I have to hard close the app and reopen it (rather than restart my phone that would be terrible) The book has so many good reviews, I just couldn't believe that what I was reading was the same book.

Um, you're welcome? LOL, it sounded so promising!

April Agreed. Also, the writing is super simple. This book was horrible.

Exactly!

Evelyn Pender still waiting for the cussing twice a sentence you’ve claimed karen. to no avail just say you’re boring and go

To each their own! Glad you are enjoying it.

Michelle Nielsen I am laughing at the cussing comment... I don't think it's excessive in the least which makes me wonder what kind of mouth I have. LOL

LOL, maybe? Or maybe it just seems excessive to me because I read a lot of psychological suspense thrillers and it's not something that's common to the genre for the most part.

message 17: by Lisa (new) - rated it 2 stars

Lisa I had a filthy feeling after reading the book.

Melissa (Semi-hiatus for Work) Lisa wrote: "I had a filthy feeling after reading the book."
Yes, this book can have that effect on people!

Brittany E Just because you're a prude and can't handle cuss words, that's no excuse to leave a bad review. How rude. Grow up

Melissa (Semi-hiatus for Work) I left a bad review because the writing is terrible and there are so many plot holes it is laughable. The language wouldn’t have been an issue if it weren’t covering up for a lack of creativity with dialogue. That said, glad you enjoyed it, there are readers for every book, this just wasn’t for me.

message 21: by Hannah (new)

Hannah You’re nicer than me. She obviously didn’t actually read the review...

Melissa (Semi-hiatus for Work) Hannah wrote: "You’re nicer than me. She obviously didn’t actually read the review..."

LOL, this is definitely a book that gets people all worked up for sure!

message 23: by Kati (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kati Phelps Dramatic much? This book was incredible. Why the nastiness?

message 24: by R. L. (new)

R. L. Peterson Ew! Thank you for the warning! Sounds awful 🤣

Anne (In Search of Wonder) I don't get why people think it's dramatic, nasty and rude not to like a book. If we all liked the same things, what a boring world it would be!

message 26: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Exactly, Anne! I feel the same way.

Melissa (Semi-hiatus for Work) Anne wrote: "I don't get why people think it's dramatic, nasty and rude not to like a book. If we all liked the same things, what a boring world it would be!"

I agree, I didn't disparage the author, the point for me is that this book definitely does not measure up to other books in this genre.

Melissa (Semi-hiatus for Work) Kati wrote: "Dramatic much? This book was incredible. Why the nastiness?"
Glad you loved it. It was not the book for me for the reasons I mentioned--too many plot holes and underdeveloped writing.

Michelle Reading Haven't read the book. Probably won't now. But wow! 5 stars for your honest yet polite review. And for the way you gracefully handle rude and angry responses. They are uncalled for but you handle them like a pro!

ReadAlongWithSue recovering from a stroke★⋆. ࿐࿔ Melissa, you are quite entitled to your review. Freedom of speech. I have no intention of reading this book, not because of your review but because I’ve chosen to read other books 🤣 like it, loath it, who should mind? It’s the readers interpretation and experience of that book. Some reviewers speak bluntly some dress it up with flowers, but at the end of the day, if I like a book and someone else doesn’t.......that’s fine. I love good and negative reviews 😂👍🥰

D Thanks for your review, I actually didn’t mind the book, and for the most part enjoyed it. But I couldn’t deny what you said in your review. The police procedures were laughable. I must have a higher tolerance for fantasy thinking! And I can’t believe people are attacking you for YOUR opinion! They could have even respectfully disagreed & point out what they liked about the book, but they end up just telling you you shouldn’t have that opinion! You do have me curious, would you mind replying with a couple of books that you really did enjoy in the suspense/thriller category. If I didn’t mind this one, I really would love to read one that I didn’t have to dumb myself down for!

Emilie I couldn't agree with you more on your review. I felt the same way. I must not be reading the same novels as everyone else if this is the best book ever for some people. The characters, the dialogue, the "investigation"... it's all so unbelievable

Thanks for your words! This is definitely a divisive book for whatever reason, LOL. A couple of thrillers I'd recommend: Little Secrets, Home Before Dark, His & Hers, Safe, A Good Marriage

I do agree, some editing would have made it better.

It's certainly a divisive book! I know that she has done a lot of marketing on TikTok, and that reaches a different audience for sure.

Melissa (Semi-hiatus for Work) Tracey wrote: "I really enjoyed this book. This review is extremely dramatic and very inaccurate. There was definitely not that many swear words."

I'm glad you enjoyed the book, maybe my tolerance for bad language isn't as high as some others, but there's definitely more than in most thrillers.

Holly B (slower pace!) Thanks for the warning!

Michelle It seems like streams of bad language is part of the general literary conversation in so many books, While I understand that, I will not pick-up or read any book with the F-bomb in the title-- thjs not only shows poor taste, but a total lack of imagination. One of my favorite authors, (that I decline to name) writes the most shocking reviews, with severe profanity throughout, I don't consider this very ethical or professional, though as a famous celebrity author, anything she writes is gold. Thank you for covering the issue of bad language, I hope this discussion/comments continue. I hope your next read is better! :)

Brandice Sorry this was a bust, Melissa! I’ve seen a lot of mixed reviews for this book and think I’ll pass. Hope you love your next read!

I have read a few since this one that I've loved, thanks for your comment!

Cathy I so agree with you. I can’t even finish it.

Melissa (Semi-hiatus for Work) Cathy wrote: "I so agree with you. I can’t even finish it."

Mindy Brittany E, I couldn't agree more. Being a boring prude is no reason to leave a negative review on an awesome book. Go back to Little House is you can't handle someone saying FUCK. Good grief Karen.

Melissa (Semi-hiatus for Work) Mindy wrote: "Brittany E, I couldn't agree more. Being a boring prude is no reason to leave a negative review on an awesome book. Go back to Little House is you can't handle someone saying FUCK. Good grief Karen."

My word this book has created some serious controversy! If you read my review, the language was really the least of my concerns, mostly the gigantic plot holes and wooden dialogue. Glad you enjoyed it, there are books out there for everyone.

Shiela Thanks for the warning, I read a lot of reviews before diving into a book. Yours was really helpful it saved me money and time, thanks again.

Mindy If you aren't reading due to her terrible review, you're missing out on a great book!

Melissa (Semi-hiatus for Work) Shiela wrote: "Thanks for the warning, I read a lot of reviews before diving into a book. Yours was really helpful it saved me money and time, thanks again."
Glad to be of help :) This is definitely a love it or hate it book it seems.

Kaceey I agree Melissa! It was a big nope for me too!

Melissa (Semi-hiatus for Work) Kaceey wrote: "I agree Melissa! It was a big nope for me too!"
It has certainly garnered quite a bit of discussion, that's for sure!
