Worthless Bum This piece of shit has the ignoble distinction of being the worst book I've ever read. It was so terrible that I only made it a few chapters into the Old Testament before giving up. Remarkably, its even worse than The Secret. I have yet to read Mein Kampf and the Koran, so it may not remain in last place for too much longer.

Manny You maybe stopped reading too soon! As someone said, there are only three cases where the sequel is clearly better than the original. The New Testament is better than the Old Testament; Huckleberry Finn is better than Tom Sawyer; and The Godfather Part 2 is better than The Godfather.

See my review of the New Testament for further comments. Oh, and Eccesiastes is definitely another good bit. It's just one of those books that starts off kind of slow.

Worthless Bum I've actually heard that the Old Testament makes for better literature than the New. There were some occational nice metaphors, but that was it. I'm not going to waste my time with this bullshit anymore when there are so many interesting books out there to read. My breif purusal of the New Testament did not yield anything more interesting than what I read from the Old, but I may give it another shot in a couple of decades when I've gone through my to-read list.

Worthless Bum Oh, and Godfather is better than Godfather 2.

Manny Ah well, tastes differ. But I still think you're underestimating the Bible in terms of literary quality. Even The God Delusion has a few positive things to say in that context.

message 6: by Robert (new)

Robert Gotta agree with Sean re: The Godfather.

I suggest Solomon's Song of Songs as it will at least surprise you that it is in the Bible.

Worthless Bum I went back and checked out Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs and skimmed some of the New Testament. I was not impressed.

Manny Hm. Just been looking at your shelf. You award Hesse's Siddhartha four stars, but you're unimpressed by Ecclesiastes. Why? I would put them in roughly the same category - great pieces of poetic, rather melancholy mysticism. I can't read German (maybe you can), and I would say that, in translation, Ecclesiastes sounded better. It's certainly quoted a lot more often. Are you sure you've given it a fair chance?

Worthless Bum I think Siddhartha was better written and made for better poetry. I didn't read much of Ecclesiastes, a few pages perhaps. I'm not going to go back and read more. I'm done with this book, for good.

Manny Well, personal tastes. Though Dawkins was very positive about Ecclesiastes in The God Delusion, if I remember correctly...

Joshua Nomen-Mutatio Ecclesiastes was one that I used to think stood out in some vaguely "good" way, but having reread it again more recently I found it to be largely reminiscent of the prototypical diary of an angsty teenager who abruptly "finds god" at the end. There's some mildly compelling and/or flowery prose there, but in terms of the central meaning of its content it's just an unrestrained outburst of the sort of adolescent nihilism of which I find Christianity to be guilty of harboring at its very core: the idea that life can only be meaningful if it results in eternal bliss and if it doesn't it is a mere "vale of tears." I find this view objectionable to say the least. Though I understand why it is so prevalent and I empathize and sympathize with those under its yoke, however, it is not a historically/culturally universal view either, and it is a view that can be reconsidered and overcome for the better.

mena ౨ৎ it's okay if you aren't religious, but what's not okay is to blatantly disrespect and insult Christianity, or any religion for that matter.

message 17: by Attena (new)

Attena (Black's version) I'm not christian, but this is not ok to disrespect other religion.

Ted Bundy I would be wary of your choices my brother. God is loving and will love you but if you deny the Christ you could unleash the wrath of God. The wrath of the man who created the universe itself. The wrath of your creator. But if you repent and pray he will love you as his child.

message 19: by Super (new)

Super Derek You're a loser and I'm not afraid to say it

Autumn Okay, that's an extremely disrespectful thing to say. You could have found a much better way of conveying that you don't like the Bible.

CooperTheGoosebumpsGuy That is very disrespectful. You don’t have to believe if you don’t want to, but that is way too far
