it was amazing

i have read this so many times throughout my life, that i have lost count. this is definitely the first book that introduced me to a dystopian world and it has become my standard for judging all others.

i think if i picked this up for the first time now, im not sure i would love it as much as i do. with an objective view, i can understand how it might feel outdated with some loose ends. but this will always have a place in my heart for helping me imagine a world and reality outside of my own.

where i originally was drawn to a world where colour does not exist, i grew up to understand the deeper themes of individuality, loneliness, memory and wisdom.

this is a classic story from my childhood that will continue on with me through life.

Sara Jesus Such a beatihful book

jessica i completely agree!

Kelly I read it for the first time this year at age 35 and I loved it. I don't give many 5 star reviews, but this one earned them all.

Sarah Ali I like this book its awesomely awesome

Jamie Dacyczyn I think this one worked (so much more than many recent dystopians) because it was beautiful in it's simplicity. It's not this huge story about some teen overthrowing a major government body. The ending is vague, and I think it works. So many books nowadays over-explain things to death.

Lane Great review! I haven’t read it since middle school (and no one was kind enough to tell young me there were OTHERS so I have always been left on that book’s cliffhanger) but I haven’t picked it because of what you were saying about modern day objectivity. I feel the same way about the book Unwind, though! That was MY first real understanding of dystopian and I’m so appreciative of it for that reason.

jessica sarah - it really is!

jamie - that is a really interesting point and one i think i agree with. one thing that has always bummed me out is that the story is so short, but when i look at it with that kind of view, it works. so maybe im not as upset about it being so short as i thought i was. maybe simplicity is key!

lane - thank you so much! im so happy to hear that you had a similar experience. i also really enjoyed unwind - which reminds me that i need to continue the series! 🙈

Jamie Dacyczyn Z For Zachariah is another classic book in this genre that does the beauty through simplicity really well.

jessica oh, ive never heard of it, but it sounds great! i will definitely check it out. thanks for the recommendation! :)

Lane I also need to continue on with Unwind! I read it before I really really got into reading, and it also happened to be the year it was published, so I didn’t understand that there would be more coming out. Lol. To this day I’ve STILL only read the first book in the series, but it’s oh so special to me. I think sometime in the near future I’ll finally get on that. 🤦‍♀
