it was amazing
bookshelves: classics, favorites

OK, I loved the book, full of mystery and suspense and a shocking surprise of what really happened to Rebecca, BUT, I am a bit confused with the ending. (view spoiler)Really need to see the movie!

Update: July, 2015 Great movie.....and how could have I have missed the word ashes at the end of of the novel!

Quotes Carol Liked

Daphne du Maurier
“If only there could be an invention that bottled up a memory, like scent. And it never faded, and it never got stale. And then, when one wanted it, the bottle could be uncorked, and it would be like living the moment all over again.”
Daphne du Maurier, Rebecca

Dem I loved this book so much but its so long since I read it that I would not be able to give answer your questions but am sure someone will.

Laura Yes it was on fire and complete loss. Not sure about scars. I haven't read this since last year. And no first name. If I remember they make mention of unique spelling but never actually say it. I'll look into the scar thing.

Carol Thank you Dem and Laura!!!

Laura It's funny how a book can be a favorite but when it comes to the details they can be forgotten.

Yes, Manderley burned to the ground. One of the many great things about this book is the mystery she added by never revealing the heroines name. I just love that touch. I finally got to see bright red rhododendrons up in WA. (very hard for me to spell that) They made me think of Manderley.
There are a dozen neverending quiz questions about the heroines name. Some of her other books are also amazing.

Carol I attribute it to the volume of books we all read or in my case old age, lol. :-)

My husband was just saying that the other day and I agree. Our brains can't possibly remember all the books we have read and now as a senior citizen I can't even recall many titles. This one is definitely worth reading again.

Laura Carol
When you read as much as you do it's impossible to remember each book. I can remember I liked it but not necessarily why :)

I am the same way Laura :-)

Alejandro You will love the movie! :) A truly classic by Hitchcock and his first directing job at the US.

In my case, it's the novel the one that I want to read now.

Laura Movie is quite good, agree.

Carol Thanks Alejandro and Laura. Have movie on the way!

Awesome! ;)

Camie It's the word " ashes" that gives it away. Surely the fire was set by Danvers ( in my mind , lol )

You are right Camie.....and I read it over more than once too :-(. Finally watched the movie, lol.

❶Ĵܱ Carol, this is another one I loved. It just so happens my library has it on hold for me and I was planning on watching it this weekend. :)

Carol Enjoy!

❶Ĵܱ Thanks :)

Bobbie This is one of my favorite books and one of my favorite movies although they did make some changes in the movie, which won Best Picture in 1940, I believe. I have read the book at least 3 times, the first time in high school and the last time a few years ago. I also have read almost all of Daphne Du Maurier's other books and enjoyed almost all of them.

Carol I agree...both book and movie were good. Have only read three of Du Maurier's books so far and loved all three, but hope to read them all! Look forward to checking out your Du Maurier ratings! :-)

Mary Beth Awesome review! I just loved Rebecca. I thought it was very suspenseful. I've read 3 of hers and really liked them
