it was amazing
bookshelves: 2020

Fantastic historical fiction set leading up to and during the revolutionary war. The main character is a young enslaved girl in a Loyalist household. I loved how historical details were seamlessly woven into this exciting story. I would have been head over heels for this book as a kid and I can’t wait to get my hands on book 2. The author did a good job of keeping historical accuracy with the difficult details of how people treated slaves and captured troops. Sensitive readers could skip chapter 23 and not miss any storyline, and other descriptions were more brief. This book will make for great discussion.

Susy C. *MotherLambReads* how old would you recommend younger readers to be?

Beth Anne For a read aloud I think younger kids in the 6-8 range could be fine. I’d say 8+ on their own, with 10+ being the sweet spot. There is realistic violence towards enslaved children, brutal and unfairly inflicted. One instance in particular (a branding) is upsetting, but also described in a dream-like sequence so younger kids may not catch all that is happening.

Perfect answer. Just what I was looking for. I think we are right at the age and maturity level and my 4 yo won't catch everything.
