Even if it is a bit academic, I found that MacCallum's introduction to the three Roman plays (Julius Caesar, Anthony and Cleopatra, and Coriolanus) was an excellent introduction to these works of Shakespeare. Starting with the texts of Plutarch and their various translations (first into French by Amyot then into English by North which is certainly the one that Shakespeare used), we gain insights into the literary and historical contexts of these works. It is worth noting the original English mythology wherein they felt that they were descendants of Aeneus and that London was the new Troy. Officially, the ambition was to be the new Rome and thus these plays had a political aim as well as a literary one. The poetry in all three is stunning and well-analyzed by MacCallum.
