it was amazing

I enjoyed this book so much! It was thrilling, scary, gory and deceptive. Everything I need to bite my nails and tell the kids to shut up and get away. (JK... maybe) She sure knows how to set the tone. Who would have thought to make a serial killer with a conscience? And that sing-song.... nice touch, Agatha!

I forgot to add that I bought this as a used book. Someone had highlighted and made notes throughout the book! It took away from me enjoying it fully because the person left so many clues. That was so annoying I couldn't concentrate on the story at times. If you write in a book DO NOT give it to Goodwill! PLEASE!

I even went as far to research the making of this book wondering why the publisher's decided to change it from "Ten Little Indians." (Google it) I guess she was a bit of a racist and it does show throughout the book but to be honest it didn't take anything away from me liking it. I don't believe in banning or restricting books. If someone doesn't like it: don't read it, don't look it at, don't talk about it (Or vent about it to a friend and move on). Simple.

Anyway, this was great and I will be reading more of her books. If someone can recommend another fabulous one please comment! I love getting into new (older) authors.

m a e g a n ♡ I've not read any Agatha Christie before, but I'm interested! Sounds like a quit, thrilling read! - bummer about the book writing! Boo.

Leila I read quite a few of hers Karina quite awhile ago and always found them such good books. She was an excellent writer. I know what you mean about being disappointed in a used book being spoiled by readers writing notes. It is really distracting. I do often buy used ones but always the ones listed "very good" Hope all is well with you and your lovely family. Stay safe xx

Oh, I hate this too! I think they should be recycled and not sold at Goodwill or any place selling used books.

Have you read anything by Daphne DuMaurier? She doesn't write in the style of Christie, but her work is gothic and mysterious. You may like it.

Karina Hi M! You will love Agatha. I even like the movies based on her books but I hear the endings get changed. You should start with this one. It's a quick thriller and engaging from the get-go.

Karina Hi Leila! Do you have a specific one you recommend? I'd love to read another one like this one. Thank you for the "very good" advice. I do tend to go for the cheaper selection. I hope you are well also! I hate seeing the news and I just saw that England is getting Coronavirus spikes again. Best wishes, friend. XO

Karina HI Caroline! I've missed seeing your well thought out reviews! I'm trying to be on GR more after such a fussy 3 months.

I agree girlie, Total jerky move or uncaring to the buyer.

Yes! I love DuMaurier. She is my top 5. I haven't read all her stuff. I have Frenchman's Creek to read in my bookshelf. Which is your favorite, so far?

I've only read Rebecca and Jamaica Inn but really enjoyed both. You said you wanted suggestions of classics, but if you're open to a modern author, Sarah Waters is talented and writes books you may like, same sort of atmosphere as DuMaurier. I highly recommend Fingersmith.

Beata One of Christie's best books, Karina :)) My first ever was "Death of the Nile", and is still my favourite & truly, truly good! So glad to see you back, Amiga! :))

Debbie W. Great review, Karina! Although it was published in America in 1940 titled TEN LITTLE INDIANS, it was originally published in the UK in 1939 titled TEN LITTLE NS (I don't want to print out this hateful word). Obviously, it was eventually changed to the title we know today. Overall, it's a great story! If interested, Shari Lapena's AN UNEXPECTED GUEST does a great modern version of this classic. Hope you get to check it out!

Joe Krakovsky Great review, Karina!

message 11: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Ansbro I must admit that I do occasionally correct grammatical errors, with a pencil, on the pages of books that will end up at a charity shop, but writing spoilers is a big no-no! : (

You can't go too far wrong with Agatha. Fab review, Karina. : )

message 12: by Peter (new)

Peter Wonderful review, Karina, on such a brilliant book and you are allowed to rant on writing in books - for me it's a prison life sentence.

It's been a while my friend and I hope you're keeping well. :):)

Cookie M. I have one problem with Christie. She sometimes withholds a vital clue until the last moment, so you have no chance of figuring out the killer. I don't mind when an author tosses off the most relevant piece of information as if it were a line on a billboard seen fleetingly, while speeding by at 75 mikes an hour. But Christie cheats.

Sonia Gomes Very nice review!

Candi Fantastic review, Karina! I really enjoyed this Christie as well. I would recommend Death on the Nile as another to read by her, but I haven't read many yet and I know there are some other good ones in store for me too :)

Sonia Gomes Candi try my favourite Murder of Roger Ackroyd and Mystery of the Blue Train. Both fantastic!

Candi Sonia wrote: "Candi try my favourite Murder of Roger Ackroyd and Mystery of the Blue Train. Both fantastic!"

I think I have both of those on my list Sonia!!

Sonia Gomes Then you are set for a good weekend!

Karina Thank you Joe! Hope you're reading a good one

Karina Based on 2 recommendations by Beata and Candi I will grab a copy of "Death on the Nile" and then move on to "Roger" and "Blue Train". Thank you Sonia, Beata and Candi for the interest! I'm so glad to be back here again!! You guys make me : )

Karina Peter! Super happy to see your name pop up. Yes, one for the guillotine... Lol. So happy to be back. I need to catch up on your reviews. My life has settled for the moment. We only have 1 computer and kids have to do Zoom meetings and math so I'm limited on the PC.... But I will try more! (promises.. *eyeroll*)

Karina Hi Kevin! Okay I can deal with grammatical corrections in books but, yeah, absolutely no lead ins to the murderer. Let me decide the weirdo mental state of said crazy person dammit! And thank you for popping up

Karina Hi Debbie. I had to Google these facts myself. I love historical facts. Glad it got changed though. The poem itself is kinda effed up. Dumb people getting killed. Thank you for the recommendation. I did read that book and now I can connect it to that. Makes so much sense now! Have a lovely week

Karina HI Ann-Marie! Your comment made me laugh bc, yes, it was true. I thought back to the story and I do see that. But she's so good! And addicting. Will read more. Have a nice week

Cookie M. I have been enjoying watching the Agatha Christie Marple Mysteries, the ones starring Geraldine McEwan as Jane Marple. She has such a perky, bright take on the character. I love what she makes of her.

Cheri I can't remember ever reading an Agatha Christie book, although my mother probably owned them all at one point or another, so I can't help you pick a next one, but am glad you loved this one so much! Excellent review, Karina, I enjoyed reading your thoughts on this.

Karina Anne-Marie, there’s a series? Oooh! How fun! I’ll look into that. Thank you

Karina Hi Cheri! Well you should probably steal them from your mom now! Lol... My mom was never a reader. Idk where I get it from but I’m glad it happened. And thank you for commenting... Have a great day!

message 29: by Karl (new) - rated it 5 stars

Karl Marberger It's a classic all right.

Karina Classics do make the newer books look like sad posers... Lol

message 31: by Yun (new) - rated it 5 stars

Yun Yay so glad to see this was a winner for you, Karina! This is my favorite Agatha Christie for how memorable it was, but honestly, I love all her books. I've been on a slow, multi-year quest to read everything by her haha. Look forward to seeing your thoughts whenever you read more of her stuff! :)

Karina Hi Yun! So glad to see you! I will follow your quest. Sounds like a fun one. I hope they are enjoyable.

Glenn I read this book 3 times. Agatha Christie is one of my favorite authors with many great books. But this will always be my favorite.

Karina Hi praise, Glenn! Thank you for the reassurance. I will read her other works but this will always be a chilly one

Excellent review, Karina, and you make a number of good points as well. When I come across things that would not be politically correct, but were accepted then, I just tell myself it was a sign of the times. Considering how long ago she wrote this story, my hat is off to her.

Karina Hi Bobby! Thank you so much. Yes. I always look at the year of publication so I know what was “acceptable for that time. You can’t read it now and be mad about 20 years ago. If she had written this now then yeah she deserves the criticism and should know better that this is the “Crystal generation and ppl get angry for anything or everything they are told on TV to be mad at My hat is off to her too! And you :)

Meghhnaa (On a Review-Writing Break!) Jesus, this book has been on my mind since long, have to pick it up soon. Post reading your lovely review, I feel I should right-away, Karina!
Thanks for bringing to light, the origin, I am gob-smacked! Never knew about the original title - "Ten Little Indians"

Karina Meghna, this is so good that many authors have tried to replicate and have failed like 'The Guest List' by Lucy Foley. It was a bit crappy if you read this one first. I recommend it, highly. During this time I made a mental note of doing 1 Agatha Christie book a month. I read the bigger ones like these first and was not disappointed.

So side note that I didn't put up there::: on 6 Nov. 1939 this title was published as Ten Little Nigg*** in the United Kingdom. I don't know if that word meant something else over there but in the United States it is/was a nasty derogatory word-- History Lesson.

Shawn I like Mary Higgins Clark classic books along with Agatha’s books. I wish they were still alive.

Karina Hi Shawn. I used to read Clark in high school and haven’t done so as an adult. Thanks for the reminder! Yeah, I agree. There’s no one like the originals

Julie G Ugh!! Don't get me started on the topic of writing in books! I agree; write away in your own copies, but keep it to yourself. I'm currently reading a book from the library and someone has written Korean all over it, in the margins, under sentences. Whoever it was underlined sentences like "We were all too tired to go to the beach." Like. . . why did you need to underline THAT??

message 44: by Karen (new)

Karen I love Agatha Christie! I am glad that you went for it, even if the person wrote in the book and was giving away some clues - you still stayed with it! Good for you! Great review Karina! :)

Karina Yes Julie!! Why highlight that meaningless sentence? Disrespectful people. And also why sell it even at a low price point? Recycle it but away forever. I don’t even understand

Karina Hi Karen! Yes I did and now I want to own a copy so at least I know I liked it. Let me know if you recommend one, Karen. All these copycats are annoying. Thank you!
