"I feel so helpless. So useless."

Revan has had many titles and jobs - savior of the Republic, Jedi, Sith, mercenary, etc. But now Revan is content to be "husband" to Bastila Shan - until strange dreams of his hidden past haunt him. He teams up with Canderous Ordo to track down his past and hopefully destroy the evil before it destroys those he loves.

I'm going to just come out and say it: I, a huge fan of Star Wars, have never played either of the "Knights of the Old Republic" games. I know, I know, sacrilege. But I haven't been a big gamer and now that I am interested, my Vista laptop won't load it. So I was excited about this book - learning more about Revan, delving into his secrets. I wanted it to make me on fire for the game and the comics. I wanted Drew Karpyshyn to come in with his glory (as he did in the Darth Bane trilogy) and blow me out of the waters.

I am MASSIVELY disappointed with this effort. Honestly, it doesn't even feel like Karpyshyn is trying. The characters are bland, the story is boring, the ending makes the entire story pointless, and the writing is mediocre. This is nowhere near as good as his Darth Bane novels. It wasn't exciting, it wasn't compelling, and it didn't ever make me interested in learning more about Revan, Canderous, or any of the other characters.

But before I heap on the criticisms, let me dole out some compliments.

1. Karpyshyn does a nice job personifying the Mandalorians. I honestly think Karen Traviss, the author who dedicated a lot of her novels to fleshing out their culture, would be pleased at how Karpyshyn wrote them. Sure, it was silly they had to find a "Mask" in order to find a leader, but this is the past. People do weird things in the past. Don't you know that we used to be obsessed with the size of people's head? They developed a whole "science" dedicated to this weird belief and called it "phrenology".

2. Karpyshyn can write action. There are some good action scenes in here. Unfortunately, bland characters and bleh writing take away what would be some kick @$$ scenes.

And...that's all folks. Sorry.

The characters were so boring and bland, honestly, it's as if Karpyshyn cut them out of cardboard and wrote "REVAN", "BASTILA", and "SCOURGE" on the top so we'd know who was who. Revan, our Gary Stu of the novel (because EVERYONE thinks he's SO GREAT - even though, in the book, he doesn't do a whole helluva lot), could have been any Jedi. I got no sense of a deep history with him, feelings, desires, doubts, anything. It's like he was a blank sheet and kept TELLING us how we should feel instead of SHOWING US.

I could FEEL Bane's anger to his father. I could FEEL Bane's desire for power. I never felt Revan's love for his wife, compassion for his friends, or frustration at not knowing his past.

But honestly "boring", "bland", and "indistinguishable" isn't a characteristic solely attributed to Revan. The entire cast could be described with these adjectives. In fact, if I were to do as I normally do, name a character and then describe them, it would look like this:

"A is boring and bland."

"B is bland and boring."

"There is nothing special about C."

And so on. And because I don't want to subject you to that, I'll skip "analyzing" each character and instead tell you some general trends that bugged me.

The women are HORRIBLY treated in this novel. Which is strange because I felt that Drew made Zannah one of the better written female characters in the Star Wars universe. Bastila Shan NEVER gets to do anything. She's always told to "stay home" and do her womanly duty, look after the child (even when she is only a month or two pregnant! Both Leia AND Mara were kicking @$$ when pregnant!). Bastila is a JEDI. She could have helped Revan in his initial mission. In fact, according to everyone else, she's supposed to be a kick @$$ Jedi. But no, Revan says to stay home with the baby, so Bastila stays. If I didn't read other reviews and conversations about KOTOR, I'd think that Bastila was yet another weak-willed "Padme Amidala", who does nothing but sit and home and mope about her man being gone.

(And my complaint isn't that she is upset about her husband being gone, it's that she never acts to find out what happened, instead foisting it on other people, as if she isn't a powerful Jedi.)

The OTHER annoying thing was the jealousy between the two women (Bastila and Meetra) over Revan. Bastila is jealous of Meetra, because Meetra is Revan's apprentice and has a "special relationship" with him. Meetra is jealous of Bastila because Bastila is Revan's wife. Does this happen in real life? Sure! Is the exploration here any good? HELL NO! Does it serve any purpose! HAHAHAHAHA, no way! Karpyshyn doesn't take the time to delve into each woman's feelings about Revan or push the narrative to a new level. It's' just a throwaway detail. Because, we can't have two women with separate connections to a man (wife, student) without the two women immediately being jealous of each other. I can't tell you how many times I've seen this flouncing around in Young Adult; I NEVER thought I would EVER have to complain about in a Star Wars book.

The last character I want to highlight is Scourge. Scourge is a great example of . We are told time and time again how "smart" and "skilled" he is, but he is constantly being out-maneuvered and outwitted by nearly every other character. It got to the point where I figured that he deluded himself into thinking he was great; he actually was probably a mediocre to poor Sith.

The gist of Revan's story here is supposed to be about him "finding his past". But then we get this weird story about Scourge and all the ways everyone can dupe him and outsmart him which doesn't make sense until 2/3 through the book. Both stories felt very much like video games: go here. Defeat boss. Get MacGuffin. Decode. Wash, rinse, repeat.

What probably disappointed me even more (if that is possible) is the ending. I can't say much, but I will say this: WHAT WAS THE POINT? Why write this story if THAT is your ending??? I hope that Karpyshyn TRIES to tie up these ends in Annihilation.

And your favorite and mine...NERD NITPICKS!!

1. The Mandalorians, a rather practical culture as defined in recent Star Wars lore, cannot have a leader of all their clans without a "Mask". This method of rule is just bursting full of problems. Though it does make a good MacGuffin for Canderous and Revan to chase.

2. I am soooo tired of Star Wars authors feeling the need to write an even more evil, bad, horrible, wicked Sith than has come before. It's at the point where you might as well just have Satan come out of Hell and start attacking the Jedi, because that's what the Emperor basically is in this book.

3. "Basic - the lingua franca of interstellar trade was known to virtually every spacefaring species in the galaxy" Why is this line in here, not once but TWICE? I think most Star Wars fans that would be reading this book would be able to WRITE forwards and backwards in Basic (Aurabesh BTW). The ONLY ones who could benefit from this are newbies, and WHY would a newbie pick up this book to start off with? Are the publishers trying to reach gamer fans of KOTOR who aren't into Star Wars? HUH??

Thank you for joining us in another NERD NITPICK!

I won't mince words: this book is massively disappointing. Disappointing as a Karpyshyn fan, disappointing as a Star Wars fan, disappointing as a potential Revan fan. I'm so underwhelmed with this novel, I'm almost dreading to read anything else by Karpyshyn or starring Revan.

I don't recommend this for fans of the video game. I don't really recommend this to Star Wars fans, new or old. This is not Karpyshyn's best work, and I don't know if that is because of deadlines, because of storyline restrictions or what. All I know is I'm one sad Star Wars fan, who is hoping Annihilation is better.

Jason Yeah, I was pretty dissappointed with this one throughout. A couple parts I can say I liked, but pretty bland overall. Annihilation is shaping up nicely, however. I was going to send you the audio, but you got the book already.

CS This book just feels so bland and generic. A shame because I do like Karpyshyn.

I totally didn't expect to get my hands on Annihilation so soon! After forking over so much for the disappointing TFU, I'm only buying the hardcovers I am 100% I'll like (like Zahn). Or if I can find them through Amazon Vine (which are typically ARCs) I'll pick them up there.

CS Chris wrote: "Um, you know there is an Angry Birds Star Wars edition, right?"

Yes, I do!! I haven't tried it, though it does look cute...

Jason You can get through this! And there are even a few parts that are...kinda OK. So you have that to look forward to. Post-Bane Drew K has been disspointing...althoug Annihilation was way better than Revan. The TFU books, however, remained entrenched as the worst books I can remember reading. Just hang in there! You will be glad you did...or is that glad it's over?

message 6: by CS (new) - rated it 2 stars

CS Thanks for the encouragement!! This book is proving far more of a challenge to read than I ever would have expected from a Karpyshyn novel! Karpyshyn did such a fabulous job with Darth Bane and Darth Zannah, that I just assumed this would be the same way. Was he up against deadlines? Was there pressure because this was a loved video game? Did he not have enough creative license? Or was his heart not in it?

TFU is pretty bad; I may not be fond of Revan here, but he has way more character and personality than Starkiller. And though there are aspects of this book that feel like a video game, nothing compares to the missions Starkiller embarks on in TFU.

But I still think the worst book is "Jedi Trial", simply because the writing is awful, the characters are unrecognizable or badly written, and the story is so generic to be unimportant. There have been SO MANY better Clone Wars stories than JT.

Jason I continue to be amazed at how awfull Jedi Trial sounds. I'm almost looking forward to reading it just for the experience of reading what may be the worst book of all time. Unrealted thought: it just dawned on me we will be reading a NEW Star Wars novelization in the near future. And tie-in books, like Jedi Trial. Wonder if any of the tie-in books will come out before the movie? Ãnd if the current EU will be able to absorb the ineviatble retcons, there will probably have to be some kind of "bridge" novel. I will be pretty upset if the new movie can't fit into established EU contuniuty and there is some kind of reboot or alternate EU. But of course I will keep on reading.

message 8: by CS (new) - rated it 2 stars

CS I've wondered the same thing. Maybe that's why there are so few books scheduled to be published in 2013? I was looking and it seemed there were fewer books than in previous years.

I hunk it would be a shame if they split the continuity. There are a lot of places for them to work in, if they have the inclination. If the world was capped out and there was a good explanation for the alternate reality, MAYBE I could get overlooking EU.

Oh well, regardless, I'll be tuning in to future books.

Jason The Mando side plot was my favorite part of the book. I was hoping his Mando buddy would continue with him on his journey. I did think the quest to find the mask was a bit stupid though. Why would a practical warrior culturee need a mask in order to decide who their leader is? Didn't make sense to me. Reason for the quest aside, I still enjoyed it. I think because there was actual characyerization and characters interacting in meaningful ways.

message 10: by CS (new) - rated it 2 stars

CS The mask plot IS pretty cheesy, particularly given the Mandalorian characterization. Probably my biggest problem with the Mando subplot. It feels largely like an excuse to include the Mandos and DO something. (MacGuffin anyone?)

This book is just so disappointing. Instead of being on fire to play the RPG or read the comics, I just want it over :P Most disappointing Star Wars read this year (so far).

Jason Yeah...I was pretty disspointed in this one too. And I really thought it would be pretty good. Drew has done some cool things with Sith in the past, he was one of the writers/game designers for TOR, and I think he was involved in created Revan for the KoTOR game. But as I had mentioned before, I always thought Drew did not have much range as a writer, and it shows her. I was surprised Annihilation was a good deal better...after the slow start.

message 12: by CS (new) - rated it 2 stars

CS I do wonder how much is Drew's fault and how much his hands were tied. Was he under pressure to get something out there fast? Did he not have much leeway with the story?

The one thing that this book has taught me is that Drew wouldn't be a terrible pick to finish Traviss' Commando series.

Jason Totally have to disagree about the IC Commando idea. He's not even close to the same league as far as writing talent goes. I don't want him anywhere near those characters! In the current author pool, I'd have to cast my vote for Paul Kemp--or even John Jackson Miller. I would love some kind of wrap up for that gaping loose-end of a story.

message 14: by CS (new) - rated it 2 stars

CS LOL, okay, okay! I still think he does a good job with the Mandos, but maybe he wouldn't do so well with Traviss' characters. Maybe Drew needs to go back and write about more Sith - ones that aren't as famous as Revan.

Jason Mercy Kill reminded me of Revan in terms of go here, learn info, go here, repeate as needed, resolve plot. What about Darth Scourge? Have you got to him yet? He came across as etremely dense to me.

message 16: by CS (new) - rated it 2 stars

CS Ugh, Scourge. I love how he's supposedly smart, but *I* figured out stuff waaaaay before he did, and I hardly call myself the sharpest tool in the shed. I still have no clue what the point of his sections are.

Jason Revan as a Gary Stu...hmmm? It's almost like he's a wannabe Gary Stu. The narrator discussed his absolute awesomeness a lot. But in practice, Revan didn't really do much...or if he did, it was so unmemorable I can't remember these acts of unparalleled awesomeness.

message 18: by CS (new) - rated it 2 stars

Very interesting!! I hadn't thought of it that way before. I just knew that the author kept saying how awesome Revan was - and everyone else thinks that. Meetra. Bastila. Even Scourge! They all go on about his "strength of will" and somesuch, and I'm just like, "Huh?"

Maybe it would be better to say he has an . He is supposedly so great, but nothing he really does seems all that special. (Most of it is in the past, which the reader doesn't know or maybe killing Nyriss, but maybe she was a wimp :P)

Jason Oddly excited about your full review...what to hear you really rip into the awfulness of this book. And yet still not as bad as TFU.

message 22: by CS (new) - rated it 2 stars

CS I really liked Karpyshyn's Darth Bane books, and I (obviously) didn't like this. If you are a Revan fan or a KOTOR fan, I think you'll be pretty disappointed.

If you can get at your library, you could check it out to see if you like.

message 23: by Andrey (new)

Andrey i did like KOTOR. Ah, well. If i get around to it i will. Not going to go out of my way though.

Laura Why is it so strange that two women are jealous over a man? That happens in real life, I don't see why it can't happen in a Star Wars book.

message 25: by CS (new) - rated it 2 stars

CS You're right; it does happen in real life. I don't particularly like it in real life either. Life is so much more for women than to be jealous of each other over a man. (How many times do we see a guy jealous of another guy over a woman? It happens, but in my experience, it happens less in novels than the women being jealous over one man.) And I was disappointed to see this in a Star Wars novel.

If it doesn't bug you, that's cool. I could just be hyper-sensitive.

message 26: by Laura (last edited Dec 08, 2012 12:10PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Laura I'm not saying it doesn't bug me, I'm just saying it's a normal thing so I don't mind seeing it in a book. Don't take this the wrong way - I'm not saying you're wrong or anything, I'm just saying I think it's fine. I feel like it's just another flaw for a book to have, and if a book didn't have flaws it would just be a stupid happy universe. Like I got annoyed that they were jealous, but it was the acceptable kind that a book should have. I didn't like it but it made sense.

message 27: by CS (new) - rated it 2 stars

CS No offense taken! And I totally understand - I get sick of perfect, happy people/universes too. Maybe if I got to know Bastila and Meetra better or if they weren't jealous because of a guy (it would be easy for one to be jealous of the skill of the other, for instance), I wouldn't mind. Or maybe if other aspects of the book were better I could tolerate it. If you could buy it, that's totally fine. As I always say: this world would be way boring if everyone was the same and had the same opinion!

Jason Great review as always...and yet I feel llet down. I was hoping you would rip into the book more. ;P

message 29: by CS (new) - rated it 2 stars

CS Thank you!! I could probably have gone a bit harsher for this review, but I think I got most of the points that REALLY bugged me.

I think one of THE saddest things about this book is I felt absolutely no connection to this rich, immersive video game that has charmed so many. Characters are missing; the remaining characters are so bland and underwhelming. There is little humor; character abilities are informed. The book is more a setup for TOR MMO than a wrap up for KOTOR.

Laura Crystal Starr Light wrote: "No offense taken! And I totally understand - I get sick of perfect, happy people/universes too. Maybe if I got to know Bastila and Meetra better or if they weren't jealous because of a guy (it woul..."

Yeah, that probably would have been better. I guess I can just relate to them; I've gotten jealous over stupid things about a guy that I know I shouldn't be jealous of, but I can't help it anyway.

But if we all had the same opinions we wouldn't need to discuss things at such length!

message 31: by CS (new) - rated it 2 stars

CS Life is much more interesting when people have different thoughts and opinions. I love hearing people's different insights into characters, stories, plots, etc. I helps me understand the book better and gain new insight/appreciation for it.

Laura Exactly! :D

Lance Shadow It's really funny what happened after I went back to this one for a second read. First time I thought this was like the best book ever, then I read it a second time and... lets just say I had to rewrite my review. I still liked it but in the same way I like Phantom Menace- a guilty pleasure.
And is it just me or does this book feel like what Michael Bay would do to Star Wars?

message 34: by CS (new) - rated it 2 stars

CS Lance wrote: "And is it just me or does this book feel like what Michael Bay would do to Star Wars? "

There are a LOT of Star Wars books that IMO sound like Michael Bay movies!

This was SUCH a disappointing book to read! I had never played KOTOR and thought this would ignite a desire - NOPE!

Lance Shadow I'll admit I like Revan better than many, but I would be lying if i didn't see why this book is so hated.
Quite a shame though that this book turned you off from playing KOTOR though, because those games are both great.
To be fair I understand why this book would make you not want to check the games out because the characters were way off, particularly bastila. Revan and Meetra are the characters the player takes on in the KOTOR games but here they are really bland and uninteresting.

Samantha I agree with most of this...but just to jump in real quick on one remark you made about why a person would start here....the only other Star Wars book I have read is Death Troopers because it didn't seem alrgely connected to the rest of the EU and I thought it would be fun. Now I wanted to get into the EU more and I decided to move chronologically. My library has Dawn of the Jedi as an e-book, but it isn't ready yet, and I only just now was able to get the Lost Tribe of the Sith: Collected Stories from the library, so this is where I started, and figured I can backtrack once the other two are available for me. So it actually is quite possible for a person who hasn't read much of the EU to begin here. The ending was piss poor.....it really jolted me away from everything else I had read prior. Scourge feels like an unconfident noob. I guess its just a way of showcasing the insecurity he has upon realizing he isn't as cool as he may have believed since he has little to no knowledge of how the Force actually works. He has a backwards character progression and appears to revert to the apprentice stage of knowledge upon meeting Revan. He loses all sense of what he has been doing and his abilities because there is something he doesn't know. That seemed strange that it would jolt him so badly.

Laura If you're just starting to read Star Wars books, I would recommend bouncing around eras. There are over 300 books and it'll take so long to get to the good stuf! I think you should read the more popular books like Shadows of the Empire and stuff with Jacen and Jaina.

Obviously you're free to do what you please, but that's just my suggestion! I started with the Bane trilogy and I then went on like I said above and I'm quite happy with that.

Thank you for this clarification! I assumed that most of the people who would read this were already familiar with the video game, that this, unlike some of the other Star Wars books (Dawn of the Jedi, Bane, Scoundrels, Hard Contact), was not intended as a "gateway" book.

I personally recommend starting with Timothy Zahn's "Heir to the Empire", "Dark Force Rising" and "The Last Command". I'll admit, though, I'm a big Zahn fangirl. It's entirely possible to jump around or pick an era and read only that or pick an author exclusively or go chronologically. It all depends on what you are game for.

Wendy, Lady Evelyn Quince I couldn't have written a better review than this! I never played the video game, but after always hearing about how great Revan was, and how he's often topped lists of both the greatest Jedi and best Sith I was psyched for this book. What a disappointment.
Karpyshyn's Bane trilogy was superb; I don't know how such an author of such an amazing trilogy dropped the ball with this one.

Allyssa Smith I read Legends and can't write in Aurabesh.

Allyssa Smith I’m considering reading it, and I can’t write in Aurabesh at all.
