really liked it

Us against You - divides our well known Beartown into innumerable fragments. The rivalry of Beartown vs Heds is centrestage but other rivalries are just as divisive. The teams are split, marriages are falling apart, friendships face trial even as Beartown starts building a new team. It's children vs parents, the violence of the 'Pack' vs its brotherhood, new levels of acceptance vs old rigid blame- the-victim norms, a new maturity vs old grudges, about holding back vs moving on.
A puppeteer politician pulls enough strings to sow distrust and dislike, and reap violence. A town that believed in Standing Tall is dwarfed by its own dislikes. What should have been 2 teams,2 nets, one ball becomes Us against You.
Mr Backman works his charm drawing one into this incredible world of Beartown. It's moving, heart- breaking and strangely uplifting to see Beartown fall to petty levels and rise again to Stand Tall.
To appreciate it fully an acquaintance with Beartown is a must then of course it's a four star or more.
One final thought - Mr Backman if you are reading this - you do need to write a little faster - I have read 50% of your books. What happens when I finish all?

Christine Wonderful review, Vandana!!! And consider yourself fortunate—I have read all his novels now. 😂😂😂

Vandana Sinha 😂😂 Christine. So who is the new favourite for you? I love reading Backman. Easy read but definitely not superficial.

Christine Oh boy. I think Backman is still my current fave though I do have a stash of authors I just love. Catherine Ryan Hyde comes to mind right away. But I keep discovering new ones that I know I will definitely read again like Diane Chamberlain, Kristin Hannah, Katherine Center, John Boyne. Then my old faves like William Kent Krueger, Sharon Bolton, Angela Marsons, Tana French. Hard to narrow down! Who are some of your faves?

Vandana Sinha Christine you broaden my vision like no one else. I have taken up reading after decades so most of the names are relatively new. So you just opened up a treasure trove for me.

Christine Oh, Vandana, I missed decades too! I picked up again in 2014 after I retired. It’s been a dream come true to have time to read now. Like you, I didn’t know any of these authors when I started back in 2014. I have jumped around a lot just sampling what’s out there, and for the most part I have been richly rewarded!
