DNF at 29%

I know that this is a very unpopular opinion as I saw and read so many 4 stars and 5 stars reviews. I wanted to like this book so much, but I just could not get into the story. This book has great potential and I understand why it is so popular, but sadly it was not for me.

The basic storyline of the book is quite easy to follow, but the Legendborn world? Not that easy
Bree’s mother died three months ago. Now, Bree just left her home to start fresh at the University of North Carolina. There, she sees magic and realizes that it is in fact the second time that someone used magic to erase her memory (but it did not work, and no one can explain why). The first time was the night her mother died. Determined to find out what really happened to her mother, Bree decides to try to join the Legendborns, a secret group dedicated to eliminating the Shadowborns (demons) with their magic (called aether), so she can find out what happened the night her mother died.

Bree got used to the fact that demons can access her world through gates fast and easily. She also learned specific vocabulary quickly. Honestly, I got lost during the explications a few times, there seemed to be so many different factions to the Legendborn (or should I say different Chapters with a very strict hierarchy: Legendborn, Vassals, Page, Scion, chosen squire, Mage, etc.). I could not get a clear picture of this secret organization. The members talk about ‘’The Code of Secrecy’ or ‘’The Order Law’, but do not give any more details about it. I do not mind a complex magic system and the one in this book is actually really interesting, but there were whole pages of info-dumping.

It has a Mortal Instrument vibe, but in this book, the Legendborns need to worry about their everyday life. They are not invisible beings that spend their whole days killing demons. They need to go to school and keep up the appearance of normal life at any cost. I liked this part, it made everything much more relatable. What bothered me was how well Bree adapts to her new reality, she even says how she has an advantage over the other Pages because she saw someone use aether before and she saw demons twice before entering the secret society. It feels as if everything falls right into place for her. She is a 16 years old teenager and she managed to infiltrate the Legendborn society even though she knows nothing about them, more than that, people just tell her inside information because she asks them. She manages to fight a demon when almost everyone else gets injured I like that she is fierce, but it didn’t feel right how everything was going so well for her after 72 hours of being thrust into this new world.

Bree is a great main character; she has spunk and is not afraid to speak her mind. It is also nice that she is a black character, I have (sadly) not read a lot of books with a black main character and it was nice to discover this story with a slightly different perspective than what I am used to. It was interesting to discover her inner thoughts and to see how she deals with racist comments and assumptions or how her perspective is affected by the history of segregation in the United States. Nick is the golden boy sidekick who lives near the campus and decides to help Bree even though he rejected his Legendborn legacy many years ago. He is a nice character, but nothing special. Then there is Selwyn, he is intriguing, and I think that I would have liked him.

Overall, I know that this is a great book for many people, but it was not one for me. It was hard for me to get into this story because of all the info-dumping. I must mention though that the writing is gorgeous, and I really enjoyed the author's style.

There are still different ways to give information. The way the author did it in this book didn't work out well for me. You are entitled to your opinion and I can have mine. I do not see why I would choose to dislike a book, I'd much rather enjoy the adventure if I can.

Tearling I'm with you. I find the heroin annoying and the world building is choppy. Not just that, I keep comparing this book to The Mortal Instruments. Maybe that is the main reason why I can't enjoy the book. I keep fishing out the similarities. Oh, I also recieved hate message from a fella named Lizie because I only gave the book 2 stars.

Sadly some people seem to have trouble respecting others opinion... 😕

Kalena Awh I’m sorry you didn’t like it, I know so many people love it. I am anticipating it but I’ll take the info dumps into mind :)

Yes so many people liked it and I think this was a case of ''it's not you it's me''. I can see the appeal of the book, and I understand why so many people liked it. I hope you enjoy it! :)

mar I thought I was the only one feeling this way! I’m 120 pages in and looking if it’s worth it to continue. It all seems too easy for Bree (like Nick just met her and she instantly knows she’s seeing magic?) and the world building is just not working well for me... it also reminds me of TMI 😢

I just found it so confusing with all the titles, and everything seemed way too easy. Let me know what you think of it if you finish it!

Pauline I'm so happy not to be the only one feeling this way! I'm seriously considering DNF-ing it, I find it so confusing and the fact that Bree uderstands everything so quickly with zero explanation bothers me lol

You're not alone! ;)
It's sad because I like the style of the author, but it was too much for me.

message 11: by Amie (new) - rated it 3 stars

Amie I also didn’t love this one. I powered through and it was okay, but it was wayyyy too much for a book 1 imo

Lucie V. Amie wrote: "I also didn’t love this one. I powered through and it was okay, but it was wayyyy too much for a book 1 imo"

You are still better than me if you finished it! 😉 But you are right, definitely too much info-dump.
Was the rest of the plot worth it? If we try to look past the major info-dump?

Alexis trimble You could have kept reading it gets better but that’s you

Lucie V. alex wrote: "You could have kept reading it gets better but that’s you"

Maybe I'll give it another try. I've read many great reviews... I guess I just wasn't feeling like pushing forward when I first read it. The writing is great, but I got completely lost with the hierarchy.

message 15: by Nim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nim Not surprising that all of these dnf whiners all seem white. It must really easy to not be able to place yourselves in the shoes of someone whose experiences are different than your own. Maybe "attempt" to actually widen perspectives like so many woc have had to do for ages. If you can't just stay quiet.

message 16: by Lucie (last edited Apr 04, 2021 05:09AM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

Lucie V. Hi Nim,
I don't see what the reader's skin color has to do with the fact that I had trouble enjoying the book because of the massive info-dumping, and because of the complex hierarchy. I do love the author's style, and the main character (as I said in the review), and me DNFing the book had nothing to do with the struggles that Bree has to go through because of her skin color.
But sure, you can accuse me of not finishing this book simply because of my skin color, you obviously know better than me why I disliked it. 🙄

via yikes that comment above! I think you had very valid reasons for not liking it, none of which had to do w the mc’s skin colour! What in the world is that assumption

My thoughts exactly! 🤷🙁

Michelle Song I felt the same! I pushed myself to finish the audiobook at 2x's speed but honestly I found the world building so hard to understand and it made me lose interest in the story.

Lucie V. Exactly! It was too much and too complicated for me, I couldn’t enjoy the story ☹️

Giselle I agree with you on the part about Bree and Nick’s relationship, I couldn’t help but be drawn to Selwyn instead. Also with the info on the hierarchies etc. It does get a bit confusing at first -especially since I was listening (I had the audiobook version) whilst multitasking/ doing tasks which made it even harder to make sense of it- but it starts to make more sense as you read on and they use the terms more, kind of like learning a language? I definitely recommend reading on though, because at first I wasn’t sure about the book myself, but soon got hooked!

I still have it on my Kindle, you're not the first one to tell me that it gets better as the story progresses. I might give it another chance, I just don't know when because I have a never-ending TBR pile! 😅
Props to you for listening to it while doing something else! I was lost when I was 100% focused on reading it, I don't imagine how it would have been if I tried to clean or cook on top of it! 😂

Paula (She Sniffs Books) Some of these comments are so unnecessary. I'm also DNFing it because I simply find it all to easy and a bit annoying. Which is a let down because I was excited to read another book with a black main character.

Glad to know I'm not the only one not on board with the (too convenient) plot. It is sad because the MC seemed really interesting. And yeah some comments are definitely pointless, but I guess some people still have trouble with respecting others' opinion 😉
How far did you make it before deciding to DNF it?

message 25: by Paula (new) - added it

Paula (She Sniffs Books) 30% and I keep contemplating giving it another go but I'm not sure...

Lucie V. Paula wrote: "30% and I keep contemplating giving it another go but I'm not sure..."

Ok, pretty much the same place that I stopped. I might give it another try someday because many people told me that it gets better later, but I'm not sure yet, and I'm not in a hurry...

Lurva Yeah so many people love it and I find the plot entirely similar to City of Bones...And I really can't accept the fact that Bree thought she can win the tournament when everybody else has years of training

Lucie V. Right?! I liked her but at the same time she annoyed me and everything was so easy for her considering that she had no experience at all with the Legendborns 🙄 But there are so many great reviews, sometimes I wonder if I’m not the problem 😅 maybe I am too picky 😅

Lurva !!! That's exactly what I thought! I struggle to the end because its rating is so high and I was so disappointed. It feels like every scene in the Mortal Instrument is in it... I still don't get why everyone loves it

Lucie V. You’re better than me! I did not finished it because the hierarchy was sooooo complex and the plot was a tad too convenient for Bree I just couldn’t get into it 🤷🏼‍♀

Katrin D I finished the book and also didn’t like it. By the end I was forcing myself to just finish it because I wanted to see whether the high rating it had was due to some mind-blowing ending. It’s baffling to me why people are commenting here negatively as if the only reason someone might dislike this book is if they were racist. No book, no matter how good someone thinks it is, will cater to everyone’s tastes. And if we have to be fair, this particular book wasn’t that great anyway (the world-building was extremely confusing - I read primarily fantasy and I’m used to complex world-building, so it wasn’t that I “didn’t get it; info-dumping; insta-love; etc.). So yeah, I agree with your review 100% 🙂

Lucie V. Thanks 😊❤️ I think this is just the kind of book that you either adore or dislike... But yeah the few comments about us (people who disliked the book) being racist are disappointing, for lack of better words.
I understand that I can't know what it's like to be a person of color in minority or the discrimination that some endure every day, but as you said, no book can please everyone, and for me (and many others who disliked this book), the main issue was the plot I think, which has nothing to do with the MC's skin color. 🤷‍♀

Zahrae I really enjoyed this book but I agree that there was a lot of info-dump usually I don't mind it when I understand the world building , but sometimes I was lost with the terms , it was a bit hard to keep up

Yeah that's what I really struggled with in this book. I'm glad you liked it though 🙂, many people told me that it gets better later in the book so I might give it another try someday... 🤔

Lucie V. ☹️ were you able to finish the book?

Selena I absolutely agree. I thought I was the only one who felt that the world building was too complex. How the magic works and all that? I mean I know how the whole shadowhunter world works like I live in it but I can't figure out how the single Aether thing works.😭

Lucie V. Oh rest assured you’re not the only one. I had to write down the hierarchy on a paper to try ronfleurs it out and I have up. 😅 the magic system was not the clearest either 🤷🏼‍♀

Pinkroyale Thank you for this review and not making me feel alone in not getting the hype behind this book. The main character was annoying to me, she’s new to this world and wants to compete in this tournament that everyone has trained for since they were young? I also agree on info dumping and the world building being so hard to understand. I can take complex world building if the author explains it better. I am confused with everything how they actually get their magic, why she is special (unless this is mentioned later on in the book). I am not sure if I should finish the book. I’m listening to it on audibook and i’m at 22%. I keep finding myself losing interest and drifting off.

Lucie V. You're very welcome! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who did not fall in love with this book. Many people told me that it gets better further in the book, but like you I was loosing interest because of the massive info-dump, and the fact that thingd seemed to be a little too convenient for the MC. She was just thrown into this world and she is immediately admitted into their secret group, not much questions asked ans she wants to be a part of everything right away... It's sad because I liked some of the ideas in this book, and the writing style was good too... 🤷‍♀

Krystina Lewis Finding these reviews is super helpful to know I’m not alone. I picked this book up because I’ve heard amazing things and I keep struggling with the fact that she just has no questions or qualms about the things she’s just learned. One minutes she’s a regular girl and the next she just like, yep I see demons? It’s causing a disconnect for me. Bree seems like an interesting character, I’m just struggling with the absolutely zero questions she’s asked.

Lucie V. Krystina wrote: "Finding these reviews is super helpful to know I’m not alone. I picked this book up because I’ve heard amazing things and I keep struggling with the fact that she just has no questions or qualms ab..."

Apparently it gets better later in the book, that's what many people who finished it told me... But I was just too frustrated with the MC's naiveté to continue. That and the massive info-dump about the secret society... 😖

Alison Hood I have the same opinion and it was also a DNF for me despite being on my TBR for so long.

Lucie V. @Alison I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you either. Apparently it gets better in the second half, but I just don’t have the motivation to give it a second try and go through that massive info dump again. 😣

message 45: by dan (new) - rated it 3 stars

dan Some of the comments accusing you of disliking the book because the MC is black is ridiculous. I truly never understood why people cannot dislike something, regardless of the kind of "representation" it has. Just because it has X or Y representation doesn't mean it is good - plus, tastes in books are so subjective; (most of the times) it has nothing to do with discrimination but yes with the personal taste of each person.

I nearly gave it 2 stars but I really liked Selwyn and the world itself.

Though I have to agree with you: the worldbuilding was info-dumped so many times. Thankfully, I know Arthurian lore quite well but even I was confused with her explanations; it was too fast, too dumped for the reader to completely understand. If I hadn't known prior to reading enouhg of Arthurian folklore, then I would've been lost and utterly confused as many people did.

I absolutely disliked the MC throughout the whole book and it gets worse as the book goes on. I often found her entitled and she was one of the best with almost no training compared to those who have been training for years (what?).

I could literally go on about what I liked and disliked of the book (I did kind of a rant on my review) but, what I wanted to say is that it really pisses me off how people have insulted you in your *own* review and accused you of being racist/discriminating solemnly the MC is black.

I know most comments are supporting you but I truly hope you never stop reviewing/saying what you liked/disliked in a book in fear of being attacked for speaking your tastes.

Happy readings

Lucie V. dan.chuchie wrote: "Some of the comments accusing you of disliking the book because the MC is black is ridiculous. I truly never understood why people cannot dislike something, regardless of the kind of "representatio..."

Oh wow, thank you so much for taking the time to comment. 💙

Don't worry, I don't let the negative comments affect me, especially if it's to call me racist because I didn't like a book that happens to have a POC MC even though y reasons have nothing to do with it. Some people are just thriving on negativity and mean comments I guess... 🤷‍♀ I know myself enough to be confident about the fact that I am not racist and that my appreciation of the book has nothing to do with the characters' skin color. This book especially seems to be pretty polarizing for some reason.

Maybe I would have been able to push through if I was more familiar with the Arthurian folklore, but since I know close to nothing about it, it was just becoming too much of an info-dump and complex hierarchy for me. I'm glad that it ended up not being too bad for you though and that you were able to finish it. I will go read your review/rant for sure, I am curious to read more about what you thought about this book. 😉

Carolina Alvarenga In my humble opinion the biggest problem with this book is that I expected to read more of black, African culture and in the end it's more of a book talking about King Arthur no matter how critical it is of the colonizer but it's 95% of the time King Arthur and 5% about Bree's black ancestors or their ancestral culture

Lucie V. I remember a few times where the MC mentioned racism and injustices, but you’re right, it was mostly focused on the King Arthur plot. But I didn’t finish the book, so it’s hard to say if it’s really something that bothered me I totally understand what you mean though!
