it was amazing
bookshelves: autobiography, favorites

While browsing my next buy, I had stumbled upon this one a number of times, before I finally decided to buy and read it last week. Time and money well spent.
So, what is the book about? First, it is not a story of a flawless man or an impeccable athlete. It is one of a confused, rebellious and an ever evolving man in search of himself, who by the way, plays great tennis. Second, it is also not a blow-by-blow account of tennis matches. But, a diary of his love-hate relationship with tennis; where he plays not because he loves tennis but he cannot live with a defeat. It is a narrative of his innermost thoughts process at moments that affected him; and not just the ones on the tennis court. Beautifully written, and brutally honest.
After reading the book, I say he is a Phoenix, burning himself down and rising from his own ashes.

Andre Agassi
“Now that I've won a slam, I know something very few people on earth are permitted to know. A win doesn't feel as good as a loss feels bad, and the good feeling doesn't last long as the bad. Not even close.”

Saransh Chhabra I read somewhere that he was obsessed with his hair(you may want to look at pics from his early playing days) and loosing them troubled him to the extent that it affected his tennis even. Has this been described?

Priyanshu Yes, the story is that he had started losing hair at an early age. So he used to wear a wig. Once, just before one of his matches something went wrong with it and he used bobby pins to keep it intact on his head. He did worry about it falling during the match, and other matches; but, nowhere in the book does he indicate that it affected his game.

Nigel He does actually. He blames his French Open final loss to Gomez on worry about his hair falling off. This is one of a long litany of excuses for any loss he has. I liked him more before I read this book.
