Albert This one is on my shelf, potentially for this year. Any initial impression?

Dennis I feel like I've been reading this forever. It's on my stereo speaker (which doubles as a "currently reading shelf") next to the bed and I'll occasionally read another story but... Short story collections are notoriously hit-and-miss and with 61 0r so stories, there are bound to be those I judge as duds+, as well as some brilliant, beautiful pieces of work such as my all-time favorite Christmas story, "Christmas is a Sad Season for the Poor" or the opening story, "Goodbye, My Brother". The problem is that the stories are almost all about suburbs of the 50's, 60's and 70's, or Italy, so they begin to feel disconcertingly similar. ("Doesn't this sound like...?") I have about a quarter of the book to go and I'll get there before I die but I'm in no rush to dive back in at any moment, I'll just let it fill the cracks in my reading and/or commuting to classes, if they ever let us back in the same room with our students here.

Sounds like what I was expecting to hear given what I have read of Cheever. I am currently reading a large collection of Updike's stories, but I am not far enough into it to have much opinion. It is large, though, so it will likely get spread out over much of this year.

Dennis Ah, Updike! I taught a lesson with "Should Wizard Hit Mommy?" which was a huge success, especially for anyone with kids!

That story is in the collection, but much farther along than I am.

Lisa I just picked this one up for a long winter's read. Have you read much?
