Well that was... something.

Not what I was expecting. I think I went into this, based on the blurb and mysterious cover art, thinking this would be more... exciting. That pieces would click into place. I wanted that "ooooooohh!!" moment, that moment everything came together, made sense. It didn't feel like there was any urgency. And Barnes kinda tries to include a bit of murder mystery but it falls flat. (view spoiler)

This felt like a less exciting, YA novel version of Knives Out.

What I liked:

Avery. The house. The secrets. I could see the wisps of the grandeur riddles and mystique that the author was trying to build.

What I didn't like:

The way everything came together at the end felt flimsy. Very flimsy. And I think Barnes knew it.

You're telling me... (view spoiler) It all just felt like a cop out. I felt like Barnes tried to tie up all these sub-plots into one big, exciting reveal, and it just didn't work cohesively the way she wanted it to.

I will mention spoilers when talking about the main guys in the novel! You have been warned!

Also, the boys. I just didn't like them. Well, I didn't like the love interests. (view spoiler)

All in all, I'm disappointed. A lot of my mutuals really liked this book, and I really wanted to, too. I might pick up the second in the series, just to see.

Still, it's a quick read and worth it if you go into it with lower expectations.

Aoife - Bookish_Babbling I got on with this better, but I do think I got caught up in a one-sitting-read on the first evening of our 9pm curfew following Christmas lolz.
I 100% had a lot of the same problems as you listed in your spoiler tag especially regarding potential triangles and lingering looks etc 🤮 and also had the sam fear despite the test results...I stoll lowke fear there is more to that connection than we're going to like if it does pan out that way in book2 - but like seriously, please DO NOT!

In saying all that, I am totally coming back fro more Xander, that kiddo intrigues me although I DO NOT want another potential triangle there 🤢

Yeah I mean I'm for sure reading book 2!! Hopefully it has a bit more thrill to it for me, but I'm glad you enjoyed it!!

Aoife - Bookish_Babbling Here's hoping, although I think I may have just picked the first book up at the right time to enjoy it...am pretty sure on another day many of the things I chose to gloss over would have annoyed me more 😅

100% agree with your point in your review about the ages being an odd choice - why not set this in early 20s/uni age...why do they have to be 16-19? Just so unbelievable to me 🤷
But I have realised this has become a recurring theme for me with YA books and started to lean more NA because of it 🙈

omg yes. I love YA and have to continually remind myself when I'm writing reviews that these characters are like 16, so obviously they make stupid mistakes.

I can't believe I'm at the age where I enjoy reading about actual adults, and even enjoy a little smut hehehe

Age differences like that always annoy me. Like, bb.... you a victim.

SARAH i agree with what you said, the plot did seem very weak and flimsy. i watched knives out a while ago and looking back, the inheritance games isn't that similar to it other than it's setting. i don't know if it was just me, but the book's writing gave me wattpad and ya 2010 vibes. but maybe it's just me idk.

I actually found the writing one of the stronger parts, but I totally know what you mean!

Jojosbookshelf Fully agree about the let's-make-Jameson-more-disagreeable-so-Grayson-is-an-option setup. Just. Why?
