I liked this story quite a bit but there were some things that I didn't care about. This second chance story has good characters. I liked their voices, they aren't young men for the time standars and that shows in their behaviour and they way the face the world. The book structure also worked better for me than the one in Unnatural, all that back and forth didn't make any favour to that book. This time around, all the past events are concentrated at the beggining to allow us to get enough background about the characters and their fall out, and then the other important bits we need to follow the story are shown us through the caracters in the present.
(view spoiler)[What I didn't like too much is that I felt the story a bit rushed at the end, and we were misleaded about some characters. When we first met Sharp, the owner of one of the gamming hells some of the characters frecuented, we're lead to believe he is a bad man, a ratbag. He comes from a shady family and is used to gets his way for whaterever means he sees fit. Kit get indebted to him to help his friend Clara, so I was waiting for that to be a trouble along the way, but then, the man resulted to be a pretty decent one, Kit and him reach and agreement and everyone goes to his Happy Ever After. It wasn't bad, don't get me wrong, but for me it was rushed. We got no hint at all the man was anything different from what we were leaded to believe at first, and then, in less than two sencences, he is a good guy... but I think this is a case of "it's me", because I've talked about it with my friend Ele, and she had a different reaction. I see her point, I think I'm being a bit difficult XD
Other thing that didn't work too well for me was all that D/S dynamic. I can't bring myself to care about that kind of thing, so I would have preferred less time between the sheets at the end an a less rushed ending, and more interactions out of bed between the characters. It suited the characters and it was well done, I don't want to give you the wrong idea, but it's not my thing...
Another thing was Freddie understanding of his father's preferences. While I buy it because it was well done, and it fitted the character and what we know about him, the explanation felt filmsy because I can buy completely he supported and understood his brother situation but, I find more difficult the same could be applied to his widowed father... I think it was a modernish mind set.
But otherwise the story was interesting and the characters are good. Even the ones I didn't like a bit, like Mabel, the former madam who was in charge of young Kit after his mother died. I think she made a horrible work of taking care of him to put it mildly. Really, was prostituting him the only solution you could find for him to contribute to his feeding? Couldn't you find some apprentship somewhere? And Kit defending her... no, that wasn't my favourite part at all... but again, as much as I despised that, it was sadly realistic. (hide spoiler)]

I've enjoyed this story and even more thanks to my fellow BR, Ele, we have had a great discussion and I love when she comes up with unexpected BRs.
