I wanted to understand the origin of the expression "Big Brother" associated with our modern world, and I immersed myself in 1984 by George Orwell. This novel of anticipation, published in 1949, is striking! We follow the destinies of Winston and Julia in this universe, which is reminiscent of ours or what it could become. Of course, it is a fable, but the images strike and remain used for a long time. After reading this cult novel, we look at certain realities differently. It is a detour that is worth it, a must. Why did I wait so long to read it?

George Orwell was a genius. This was the first book l read by him, but he sought out and read other books by him. Animal Farm is brilliant. So is Homage to Catalonia and The Road To Wigan Pier.
He was a champion for the working class in England. What he saw in the coal mines shocked him.

If you enjoyed 1984 and have not read Arthur Koestler's 𝘋𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘵 𝘕𝘰𝘰𝘯 I cant recommend it enough!

Seconded - Koestler's is probably the better book.

Good review, í. As far as I know, Orwell had the Stalinist regime in mind, and feared for the future of freedom in the west, in moments in which the british intellectual groups were very sympathetic with the Soviet ideas. Regards.
Lovely review, Luis! My motivation for reading this was the same as yours, I wanted to finally understand all the pop culture references that came from this book, and it was worth the read. :)

Luis: I do not think of "1984" as a fable. That is a much better label for ANIMAL FARM. "1984" is Stalin's Russia imposed upon Britain, and its copycats throughout the world. Orwell was not a prophet. He thought of himself as a chronicler of what had already happened.
