Eventide continues Haruf’s depiction of Holt, Colorado, begun in Plainsong, of a small town with a wide range of humanity. Like Plainsong, Eventide is a beautiful work with moving characters, captivating imagery, and a clear view of humanity at its core. It made me cry both for struggles of its characters and the clarity of its writing. Familiar characters from Plainsong, Tom Guthrie, Maggie Jones, Harold and Raymond McPheron, and Victoria Robideaux, are joined by a new roster of characters, young and old, good and bad. A joy to read, and an easy recommendation.

Terry Everett I cried several times reading this book, cried over the hard truths that all too frequently things are not going to get better.

Will Byrnes Yep

Terry Everett Alas, but what a beautiful book.

Cecily Beautiful book; beautiful review. Yes, this had me close to tears as well - more than once. Plainsong was beautiful too, but this had the edge, emotionally for me.

Karen I have a feeling that I have read all 3 of these books many years ago..,, but I am going to get the first one again to see if I'm right😊 wonderful review Will!!

Will Byrnes Thanks, Karen, They bear re-reading.

Erin Strong I loved this book. Thanks for the recommendation!

Will Byrnes It really is a beautiful book.

Jean Mandella Having been raised in a small farm town, I’m drawn to stories that depict the quiet lives of people you feel you know, or could have known growing up. I read “Plainsong years ago and recall liking it but now I find the need to go back and reread it, having spent a few days in Mr Haruf’s world of Holt, Colorado and falling back in love with his beautiful, descriptive, gentle storytelling style. I love a novel that gives readers a glimpse into the lives of a town’s inhabitants and as the story unfolds we see how their lives cross cross. I am saddened to be reminded that Kent Haruf is no longer on this earth but appreciate the storyteller that he was.

Will Byrnes Although my upbringing was in the not-so-small town of Da Bronx, and I lived almost all my life in NYC, Haruf's writing touched me. His serene, disciplined, beautiful story-telling reached across the big city walls to offer a very accessible sense of what life in such a different place might be like. He was one of my favorite authors. Thankfully, Haruf's work will live forever.

Charlie Miller Hi Will would you say I need to read Plainsong first or will it work to just jump into this one?

message 12: by Will (new) - rated it 5 stars

Will Byrnes While it is possible to read Eventide as a stand-alone, I would read Plainsong first.

Karen Ng GR is weird, this review popped up on my newsfeed today. Just want to say. He was one of my favorite authors, too. GR only contains my books after they merged with Shelfari decades ago.

Ned Plainsong is on my shelf, physically so very close to getting the call

Lorna Beautiful review for a beautiful book. Kent Haruf is a beloved author, especially for all of us in Colorado.

Aisha Our souls at night is the only Kent Haruf book I have read and I loved it so much! His style of prose is so easy to read and sinks in effortlessly. I've been meaning to read more of his works and this book (and others in the order that you've mentioned) is probably a good place to start. Thanks for this review!
